Emmanuel Katongole is a Ugandan statistician, entrepreneur, economist, industrialist and businessman.
He is the executive chairman of Cipla Quality Chemical Industries Limited (CQCIL), Sub-Saharan Africa’s sole business authorised to produce triple-combination anti-retroviral medications.
Since 2014, he has also served as the chairman of the Uganda National Oil Company.
Early Life and Education
Emmanuel Katongole was born on April 27, 1962. He is married to Resty Katongole and together they have two sons and two daughters.
Emmanuel received his secondary education at Namilyango College.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Statistics (B.Stat) from Makerere University.
He also obtained a Master of Arts in economic policy and planning from Makerere University.
Emmanuel has received several additional credentials from Ugandan and European institutions for a variety of short-term courses in economics, statistics, and management.
Career and Professional Work Experience

Quality Chemicals Limited (QCL) was created in 1997 by Katongole, Randall Tierney, Francis X. Kitaka, Frederick Mutebi Kitaka, and George Baguma. The company specialised in importing Indian generic veterinary and human medications.
From 1997 through 2007, Katongole served as managing director and CEO, as well as a shareholder.
In 2004, QCL persuaded Cipla, an Indian pharmaceutical company, to form a joint venture and build a pharmaceutical factory in Uganda. The foundation was laid in 2005, and the factory was completed in 2007.
Quality Chemical Industries Limited was the initial name of the joint venture.
From 2007 through 2013, Katongole served as the company’s CEO.
Cipla acquired a controlling majority stake in QCIL in November 2013, rebranding the firm CIPLAQCIL and appointing Katongole as executive chairman until now.
President Yoweri Museveni appointed Katongole as head of the Uganda National Oil Company in July 2014.
Emmanuel Katongole has previously served on the boards of various Ugandan schools, faith-based institutions, banks, and philanthropic organisations as Chair or Member.
He was a member of the Board of Uganda National Referral Hospital Mulago from 2010 to 2015.
He was also the Chairman of Muteesa 1 Royal University Council in the same period from 2010 to 2015.
Emmanuel was also the Board Member of the Uganda Manufacturers Association from 2010 to 2013 and the Vice Chairman of the Uganda Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association from 2009 to 2015.
Katongole is a Rotarian and a member of the Muyenga Rotary Club. He also works with the Rotary Foundation as an Endowment and Major Gifts Advisor.
He also served as the district governor of Rotary District 9211, which includes Tanzania and Uganda.
On April 8, 2020, the president of Uganda designated him chairperson of the National Response Fund to Covid-19.
Achievements and Awards

Emmanuel Katongole is the owner of Vero Food Industries Limited, at Kampala’s Industrial and Business Park, Namanve, Wakiso District.
He owns Tinosoft Limited, an information technology company, in Kampala.
He also owns Quality Chemical Industries Limited, a manufacturer of antimalarial and antiretroviral medications in Luzira, Kampala.
Emmanuel Katongole is a member of the Initiative for Global Development (IGD) – Frontier 100, an organisation that brings together the most successful business leaders from Europe and the United States to work in frontier markets.
Emmanuel Katongole received the 2017 Airtel Uganda Outstanding Humanitarian Award.
He was a finalist at the 2013 Ernst and Young World Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, which were held in Monte Carlo-Monaco, and as a result, he was inducted into the renowned World Entrepreneur of the Year Hall of Fame.
He earned the Africa Business Leadership Award 2012, which was hosted in Arusha, Tanzania, and the 2012 Africa Entrepreneurship Award, which was presented in Accra, Ghana, by the Africa Leadership Network, which is based in South Africa.
He was named the East Africa Regional winner of CEO Global’s Titans-Building Nations Awards in the Chemical, Pharmaceutical, and Petrochemical sectors in 2015/2016.
CEO Global is an international organisation that recognises African entrepreneurs for their major contributions to the economy’s long-term development.
Emmanuel also presided over the installation of the new Archbishop of Kampala, His Grace Dr. Paul Ssemogerere, on January 25, 2022.
Katongole, a devout Roman Catholic, was nominated as one of eight parishioners to receive the order of papal knighthood in February 2021.
