Nabukenya’s death: No footage on accident, CCTV cameras were not working – Police Spokesperson Enanga

Update on Nabukenya’s deathPolice spokesperson, Fred Enanga has insisted that they are working to ensure that CCTV cameras around the country are fully operational all the time to be in a position to record and capture events and situations that require a review.

Following an incident that saw a one people power supporter Rita Nabukenya die in a nasty accident that majority eyewitnesses stressed was caused by a police patrol that knocked down the boda boda carrying Nabukenya.

In response to the allegations, the police spokesperson Fred Enanga earlier said that the CCTV cameras at that exact point were the accident occurred were not working because underground fibre cables had been interrupted by ongoing road construction works.

“The cameras around the whole section were not working due to disruptions in the fibre optic underground cables, following construction works along the Ntinda – Nakawa-Naguru stretch. Other failures are usually due to constant power outages in certain policing divisions, as well as the erection of banners and billboards within the corridors of CCTV camera view which grossly impacts our investigations”.

However, Enanga has implied that Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola has ordered for the daily monitoring of all CCTV cameras to avoid a repeat of the same incident.

Besides, Enanga stressed that they are also working closely with KCCA planners responsible for city works, to adopt new technologies for construction that minimize the disruption of typical underground utility construction but also deployment of new technologies that can help speed up renovations and constructions.

“The IGP has tasked the Directorate of ICT to regularly check CCTV system and ensure every single camera deployed is working and if not, it should be fixed immediately,” Enanga said.

Enanga who was first to credit the role played by these cameras added that since their installation records of crime incidents including cases of pickpocketing, shoplifting, and theft from motor vehicles among others have been reduced.
