Police arrest 10 suspects over killing of Makerere University student, Emmanuel Tegu

Police have arrested up to ten suspects concerning the killing of Emmanuel Tegu, a third-year veterinary student of Makerere University.

Tegu was allegedly beaten and killed by a mob on Sunday. According to the Kampala Police Metropolitan spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, they have arrested a group of people suspected to have involved themselves in the action.

The suspects all residents of Makerere have since been remanded at Wandegeya police station with the search for others who took off also going on according to Onyango.

“All the suspects are residents of Makerere University in Kampala. They are detained at Wandegeya Police Station pending interrogation,” Onyango said adding that they cannot disclose the names of those involved because proper investigations are still on the run.

“The suspects, whose identities will be disclosed after interrogation, are said to have participated in the mob action that led to the death of the student. Our teams are also pursuing others who took off.”

Earlier, information was circulating corners that the deceased was manhandled by the Local Defence Unit (LDUs) after he was found moving past the curfew time.

Tegu’s family also insist that their member was beaten and hit by the LDUs and the police within the university near Lumumba Hall at night for unclear reasons before he was dumped at Mulago hospital where he breathed his last.

Tegu was allegedly beaten and killed
Police says Tegu was allegedly beaten and killed by a mob on Sunday.

While addressing a presser, Onyango refuted these allegations adding that they have never deployed any LDUs to guard and operate in the education Institution as the deceased alleged before his death.

“There is also fake news milling around that he was beaten by LDUs. No single LDU personnel is deployed at Makerere University. The security of the university is being managed by police and private security firms,” he said.

“Makerere University is guarded by only police officers and private security guards, therefore, LDUs didn’t beat anyone since they aren’t deployed at that education institution,” Onyango said.

Also, he reechoed that they have embarked on investigations to determine the truth concerning the killing of Emmanuel Tegu, a third-year Makerere student.

Onyango said, however, that the information they have at hand is that police learnt of the happening through a phone call from an unidentified person who said a group of people were beating up a suspected thief.

Onyango explained that when the police arrived at the scene they found the victim lying unconscious on the floor.

He further denied claims that police dumped Tegu at Mulago hospital, claiming a police patrol vehicle arrived at the scene later and took him to the hospital.
