Margaret Muhanga is a Ugandan politician, the State Minister for Primary Healthcare, Rotarian, journalist, development consultant and a businesswoman.

Early Life and Education

Margaret Muhanga was born to Constance Muhangazima Adyeri. And some of her siblings include; Journalist Andrew Mwenda and UPDF’s Maj. Gen Kayanja Muhanga

Work and Experience

Margaret Muhanga is the current Minister of State for Primary Healthcare appointed by His Excellency the President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in 2021.

In addition to her ministerial duties, Muhanga is a development consultant, Rotarian who loves Rotary International Network of Rotarians, a farmer who rears goats and cattle, and the CEO of Diamond Empowerment Ltd and Fort Fun City Fort Portal.

Muhanga as well served as an administrator at the office of the president, former journalist New Vision. 

She worked for New Vision in the early 1990s covering parliament, and former Woman Member of Parliament for Kabarole District 2006-2011 and then Burahya County MP Kabarole District in the 10th parliament.

While working with the New Vision, Muhanga was rebellious. She initiated a strike at parliament in 1999 because parliament had refused to allocate an office for journalists reporting on parliamentary affairs. 

However, she succeeded; an office was offered to journalists at parliament.

Together with Henry Ochieng, they started the Parliamentary Association of journalists, where Muhanga was the chairman and Ochieng the vice-chairman.

Muhanga got into politics because she loves helping people, but she has no interest in politics.


Margaret Muhanga got herself in several controversies; in 2021, she told Hon Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, the former Speaker of Parliament, that she would go back to Busoga and grow sugarcanes.

This was after Kadaga disrespected the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party decision of fronting Jacob Oulanyah for parliamentary speakership even after making a tacit agreement in 2016 when the latter chose not to contest against her. 

Kadaga contested as an independent candidate but lost the vote to Oulanyah.

In 2017, Margaret Muhanga shocked the country when she claimed that she had sold goats and cows to raise Shs10billion that she used to buy Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) land in Bugolobi, a Kampala suburb when tasked by the Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises to reveal how she raised the money to purchase the land.

At the time, she was serving as an MP for Burahya County and a member at COSASE. However, till today, Muhanga UBC hasn’t reclaimed the land from Muhanga that was controversially sold out in 2015.


Margaret Muhanga is married to Michael Mugisha, the Executive Director of the National Forestry Authority and together they are parents. 

She’s as well a guardian to many children including orphans.
