Godfrey Wamala alias Troy sentenced to 14 years in prison for causing singer Mowzey Radio’s death

Godfrey Wamala alias Troy has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after he was convicted with manslaughter following singer Moses Ssekibogo alias Mowzey Radio’s death.

The court ruling says that Troy has been found guilty of manslaughter and not murder as it had first been thought earlier.

Justice Jane Abodo of Entebbe High Court on Thursday reiterated that Wamala did not have malice aforethought (intention) to kill Mowzey even though the Goodlyfe Crew member died following a bar brawl.

According to the judge ruling, Troy is to spend 13 years, three months and four days in prison because he has already served one year, eight months and 26 days on remand in Kigo Prison.

However, Troy according to Justice Abodo, has a chance and a right to appeal against the Court’s decision in case he is not satisfied with the ruling.

Earlier, the prosecution had indicated that Troy grabbed Radio, beat him seriously using a wine bottle and then threw him down, from where he sustained serious injuries on the head.

Then he took off and hid in Kyengera and that’s where the police arrested him from, on February 4. 2018, after the singer’s death at Case Hospital, Wandegeya where he had been admitted.

On Monday 28, October 2019, Justice Jane Abodo of Entebbe High Court found Troy guilty of manslaughter, not murder, basing on his defence statement.

Abodo in her ruling argued that despite Radio’s death after a bar brawl, Troy did not have malice intentions to murder the legendary singer.

Justice Abodo ruled that Troy linked himself to the scene of the crime, after admitting that he witnessed what happened to Radio that night.

However, according to Troy, while spending some time at the DeBar in Entebbe, with his colleagues, Mowzey Radio intentionally poured wine at them and also eventually began insulting the bar owner identified as George Egesa.

This angered the bar owner, Egesa and he attempted to fight back at the musician and he (Troy) together with a one-man identified as Hassan intervened to put the situation to calm.

“George pushed the table which had drinks and tried to attack the radio but was restrained by myself and Hassan. we told him that it was not worth to fight mowzey radio,” troy informed court.

He added, “in the due process, Mowzey radio started fighting everyone who came close to him, maybe he thought they were all his enemies. he kept his guard up trying to fight.”

Also, Troy says that Radio was then held and pushed out of the De Bar by some gentlemen he did not identify. Accordingly, Egesa was also held by Hassan Muwonge.

Besides, Troy says that he did not hit Radio as the accusers claim but he narrates that he was trying to rescue the singer from the men who were beating him up, but they overpowered him and in the process, Radio fell onto the floor.

“I held one of the gentlemen, but I was overpowered and found myself on the ground. when I stood up, they were still fighting with a radio who was already down. I lost interest in trying to stop the fight and moved on. I got a boda boda and called back the oc katabi, because I had an appointment with him,” troy implied before adding that he did not beat, carry and throw down the musician like many claims.

“The only thing I did that day during de bar brawl was trying to stop the fight. i didn’t lift anyone like they said i lifted the deceased and threw him down. i don’t remember touching him.”
