Peter Ogwang is a politician from Uganda. He is the current Ugandan Cabinet’s Minister of State for Sports. He was chosen on 22nd July 2022, to the position to succeed Denis Obua.
He had previously held the positions of State Minister for Information, Communication, ICT, and National Guidance and State Minister for Economic Monitoring.
He had been chosen to serve as Katakwi District’s Usuk County’s Member of Parliament during the 10th Parliament (2016-2021).
Early Life and Education
Peter Ogwang was born on 15th December 1983, in Katakwi District.
Ogwang’s first wife is Victoria Ateluna Ogwang. He recently married a second wife Sarah Ogwang who is a daughter of Mzee Kesi Bunanukye from Kashongi county in Kiruhura district.
He was a pupil at Moru Apesur Primary in 1955. He completed his O-Level studies at Soroti Secondary School in 1999, receiving his Uganda Certificate of Education.
He switched schools and finished his A-Levels at Tororo Progressive Academy, where he also received his Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education in 2001.
From the Makerere Institute for Social Development, he received both a Certificate (in 2003) and a Diploma (in 2005) in Social Work and Social Administration (affiliated with Makerere University Business School).
He was pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration degree from Victoria University Uganda as of February 2020.
Career and Professional Work Experience
Ogwang worked at the State House as the Assistant Private Secretary to the President of Uganda from 2007 to 2010.
He ran successfully in 2011 for the Eastern Uganda Youth Parliament seat under the banner of the political party in power, the National Resistance Movement.
He won and served in the 9th Parliament as the youth representative (2011-2016). He was chosen as the current MP for Usuk County in the 2016 general election.
On December 14, 2019, Peter Ogwang was added to the cabinet in a reshuffle. On January 13, 2020, he took the oath of office as State Minister for Information, Communication, ICT, and National Guidance following parliamentary confirmation.
On 21st July 2022, Peter Ogwang was appointed by the President as the Minister of State for Sports in yet another Cabinet reshuffle. He had previously been serving as the Minister of State for Economic Monitoring in the President’s Office.
He also performs the following additional parliamentary duties: He participates in both the Parliamentary Budget Committee and the Committee on Presidential Affairs. He was also selected to be a COVID-19 national task force member.
Emmanuel Byamukama Tayebwa a concerned resident of Katakwi District alleged that Ogwang didn’t possess authentic academic documents for his ministerial appointments and elections.
Ogwang was approved as the State Minister for Information, Communication, ICT, and National Guidance in January 2020 by the appointment committee after clarifying his academic documents.
