Mirembe Rachael, better known as Recho Rey, is a rising female Ugandan hip-hop music artist, singer, and songwriter.
She rose to prominence in 2018 after releasing her hit single Guma Bakunyige, which peaked at number three on the Top 10 monthly radio songs in Uganda in December 2018.
Early life and Education
Recho Rey was born on April 5, 1998, to George William Kawanda (father) and Esther Nakakande (mother) in Kireka, Uganda, a suburb of Kampala. Recho is the firstborn in a family of three girls.
She attended Pioneer Day and Boarding Primary School, Namboole High School, and Standard College, Nsangi before enrolling at Standard College, Nsangi.
Due to a lack of school fees after S.6, she decided to pursue music, beginning with a talent show called ‘Who Is Who,’ which gave birth to her debut hit, Who Is She? She intends to study mass communication at Makerere University.
Career and Professional Work Experience
Recho Rey began singing in 2017 after finishing her A levels, where she was a street rapper with bar performances that garnered her attention and the MTN Cypher UG Hip Hop Award.
She later produced and released her first hit single, Guma Bakunyige, which received extensive radio and television airplay in 2018.
Achievements and Awards
Recho Rey won Female Rapper of the Year and Rookie of the Year at the 2019 MTN Hip Hop Awards, making her the most awarded female on a single night at the Awards Ceremony.
Recho Rey also received two awards at the fourth edition of the MTN UG Hip Hop Awards 2020 alongside Ugandan rappers BigTril and Navio.
Rey was nominated as Female Artist of the Year for the MTN UG Hip Hop Awards 2021, competing against a slew of incredible female artists including Felista Di Superstar, Stone Age, and MC Yallah.
According to her estimated net worth, Recho Rey has a net worth of UGX 82 million, with revenue of UGX 24 million in 2019 and UGX 25 million in 2022, her best earnings year since debut.

Controversies
In March 2022 Recho Rey denied allegations that she had terminated a pregnancy the previous year. In an interview, Recho Rey stated that the rumours began after her large stomach vanished.
She claimed that she didn’t have an abortion and she was just going through certain difficult life challenges which caused her to be depressed.
Some of her problems arose due to her former management, who stopped managing her career, and the Covid-19 lockdown. She was financially insecure, which impacted her mental health.
Recho Rey fired her manager Arnold Sempijja aka Apple Producer in July 2020 after years of working together to advance her career.
According to a letter posted on Recho Rey’s social media, she and her manager Apple are no longer on the same page in terms of business. Apple was no longer an employee of Recho’s One Ticket Management and Black Girl Fly Entertainment, according to a legal notice.
