Varieties

Red dragon fruit has a sweet, delicate flavor that could be described as “tropical.” It is often eaten fresh but also cooked into sauces and syrups for desserts or cocktails.

Dragon fruits come in many varieties and can be found at supermarkets and farmer’s markets. Some even have names derived from popular songs.

Delight is self-fertile and thrives in full sun conditions. Harvestable dates for this variety range from June through December.

Zamorano is another widely sought-after variety, boasting pink to deep red skin and snow-white flesh dotted with small black seeds. This self-pollinating fruit can weigh up to 1.5 pounds!

Dendrogram analysis of four distinct dragon fruit genotypes revealed significant genetic variation among species in terms of cladode, flower and fruit characters. 

Species DGF1 (Hylocereus undatus) and DGF4 (Hylocereus costariscensis) clustered together while DGF2 and DGF3 (Hylocereus megalanthus) formed another group. 

Peels from DGF1 and DGF3 contained more total phenolic content than their pulp counterparts while DGF2 and DGF4 had lower DPPH-based antioxidant activity overall.

Storage

Ripe dragon fruit only lasts for a short time at room temperature, so you must store it to prevent spoilage. You can slow the ripening process by keeping uncut dragon fruit in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.

Storing dragon fruit is easy: slice it in half and store the slices in an airtight container or bag in your fridge until you’re ready to consume them. 

If storing in the freezer, be sure to write down the date and use-by date so you know when it should be eaten.

Preparation

Red dragon fruit is an exquisite tropical fruit that can be enjoyed raw or prepared into various recipes. It’s effortless to prepare and makes for an excellent addition to any healthy diet!

Start by peeling away the skin with a vegetable peeler or sharp knife, as this will prevent it from transferring harmful bacteria into the interior.

When ready to serve, slice it in half from stem to root. You may also use a spoon to scoop out any flesh with ease.

Once the interior is free from its skin, cut the fruit into chunks and enjoy as a snack or add it to a smoothie or fruit salad.

The flesh is soft, slightly sweet, and packed full of tiny black edible seeds. It tastes somewhat like a cross between pear, kiwifruit, and sugar beet.

It depends on the individual’s taste preferences. Red dragon fruit has a sharper, tangier flavor than white, but some people may find the flavor too intense. White dragon fruit is milder and sweeter, but those who prefer a tart flavor may prefer red. 

Additionally, the red dragon fruit has a higher vitamin and mineral content than white, so those who are looking for more nutrients may prefer the red as well.
