The Uganda Communications Commission has asked Google to block 13 YouTube channels linked to Bobi Wine’s NUP on allegations of inciting violence.

The government of Uganda through the Uganda Communications Commission has asked Google to block 13 YouTube channels that are leaning towards the National Unity Platform including the Ghetto TV.

According to the letter that was dated December 9, 2020, that UCC sent to the CEO of Google in the USA, the communications regulator said that these channels violate the Ugandan Law, using YouTube.

“The commission is in dispatch of complaints from stakeholders together with the Minister of Internal Affairs {as chairperson of the National Security Council], the Uganda Police and has also observed that communication services, platforms and networks including You tube are being used to publish, disseminate, and/ or broadcast content that is contrary to Uganda communications Act of 2013 and Regulations 8{2] of the Uganda communications,” the letter read.

The channels that the government has asked to be blocked include; Lumbuye Fred, Ghetto TV, TMO online owned by Tamale Mirundi, Trending Channel, Uganda Yaffe, Uganda News updates, Uganda Empya, MAP media TV, KK TV, Ekyooto TV, Namungo media, JB Muwonge and Bob wine 2021.

UCC says these channels misrepresent information, views, events and facts in a way that is likely to incite violence against sections of the public on account of their tribe and political opinions.

“Wherefore, as the regulator as the regulator of the communications sector in Uganda and in accordance with the sections 5{1] b, j, {x], 6 and 45 of the Uganda communication Act 2013, the commission hereby implores Google to block access to the following accounts,” UCC added.

Early this year the commission had asked all bloggers and online channel owners to register under the commission but few of them responded to the call.
