Family Background

When Frank Gashumba’s grandparents moved from Rwanda to Uganda in 1923, they initially made their home in Ankole (Mbarara). However, things didn’t work out, so they moved to Masaka.

Given that Gashumba and his father were born in Masaka, they are of Rwandan descent living in Uganda.

Family Life

Frank Gashumba is a single father of two daughters: socialite Sheila Gashumba and Catherine Gashumba, whose mother is Tinah Mukuza.

At one moment, Gashumba commented on social media that his family’s detractors were “piglets”. But after Sheila Gashumba’s careless way of living, he stepped out to defend himself against the kind of life his proud daughter was leading at the time.

Frank Gashumba raised money for Aisha Nabukeera’s surgery in the early 2000s after her stepmother had burned her.

He was instrumental in saving Nabukeera, even if other benevolent individuals also played a significant role in her well-being. She became his adopted daughter afterwards.

Frank Gashumba introduced in traditional ceremony

Frank Gashumba, the founder of Sisimuka Uganda and a well-known media commentator, was officially introduced to the family of his fiancée, Patience Mutoni Malaika, in a traditional ceremony held in Sembabule on Thursday, 15 May 2025.

The introduction, known as a “Gusaba,” caught many by surprise—particularly those familiar with Gashumba’s earlier statements dismissing the idea of marriage.

Who is Patience Mutoni Malaika?

Patience Mutoni Malaika is a Rwandan-born Ugandan woman, believed to be in her mid-20s. Her relationship with Gashumba had remained largely out of the public eye until news of the ceremony surfaced.

Pregnancy rumours and social media buzz

Shortly after the traditional introduction, a video emerged online in June appearing to show Malaika visibly pregnant. In the clip, she is referred to as Gashumba’s wife, sparking further speculation. Attempts to reach the couple for comment on the matter were unsuccessful.

Public reactions

The marriage has stirred conversation on social media, with reactions ranging from congratulatory messages to commentary on the couple’s apparent age difference.

Since the ceremony, the pair have made a few public appearances together—most notably at musician The Ben’s concert at Kampala Serena Hotel.

Career and Professional Work Experience

Frank Gashumba started working shortly after graduating in 1996. He spent a year and a half working for the Latter-Day Saints Church before starting his own business in 1997.

He started by establishing his Mali Mixed Farm in Masaka in 1997. Gashumba then formally established the Mali Group of Companies in 1998.

Over time, he expanded the business to include courier, transportation, and mineral exploration firms in addition to the agriculture division.

In addition, Gashumba established Sarafina Safaris in 1998, which provides tour and vacation services along with skills development and Sarafina Skills Service, which places job candidates seeking employment abroad.

Gashumba established Bbunda Holdings, a mineral exploration business that also operates a gold and timber dealership in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and owns Iranda Holdings, a real estate firm, in the early 2000s.

He did, however, also hold the position of Chief Executive Officer of Great Lakes Investments until 2001.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gashumba launched the Sarafina Water Company in 2010.

Achievements and Awards

Frank Gashumba claims to have one of the biggest organic social media followings in Uganda, even though he has never requested any followings.

Due to his popularity as a social activist and the amount of media coverage he has received, Gashumba is widely recognized and regarded as an inspiration by the public.

Controversies

Although many people greatly adore Frank Gashumba, his life is shrouded in controversy. Many people also consider him a conceited brat who will take advantage of any chance to get attention.

His detractors call Gashumba a know-it-all since he has offered commentary on almost every occurrence.

Gashumba criticizes Kampala’s extravagant way of living, claiming it has driven many individuals into a life of despair.

The political class of Kampala is reversed by Gashumba, who hates them for being filthy liars and uneducated.

Many business controversies have engulfed Frank Gashumba, and some people think that a large portion of his income comes from the illegal ventures he manages.

It was discovered that the contraband found at his home could be worth approximately 44 billion Ugandan Shillings, or $12 million.

Between 2006 and 2008, Gashumba faced several charges in the Buganda Road Court, including forgery, malicious property damage, and obtaining money from Abdul Ssali under false pretences.

Gashumba later released a defensive statement in which he claimed that these charges were dropped due to a lack of prosecution.

On suspicion of being a spy operative for the Rwandan government, Gashumba was previously taken into custody.

Additionally, he has had heated verbal arguments with well-known individuals such as Speaker Rebecca Kadaga, who called him a Rwandan who had no business criticizing Ugandans. He threatened to sue her if she did not offer him an apology.

Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) granted an order preventing NTV from airing the troubled Gashumba till further notice.

In response, Frank Gashumba attacked UCC and called them Certified Cowards, claiming that the government was attempting to prevent him from being televised and that UCC was not the cause of this.

Gashumba was convicted guilty in February 2011 at Buganda Road Court for unsuccessfully trying to defraud DFCU Bank of more than 178 million Ugandan Shillings. He was thus fined one million Uganda Shillings.

Gashumba, however, claimed in his defence that he filed an appeal with the High Court of Kampala following the court’s decision in the case against him and was cleared of all charges, along with receiving his money back; a claim that was not confirmed.

On October 3, 2011, Gashumba was again arrested and held at Central Police Station when he tried to con a Turkish company, EYG Group, out of roughly shs80 billion ($28 million) by posing as a government official.

Gashumba, John Batte, also known as Otim, and Timothy Ssebuguzi were accused in this case of plotting to swindle Akin CakMark out of around $28 million. According to reports, the three people presented fake paperwork to the Ugandan government to obtain 58 fire trucks.

However, they were later found not guilty due to a lack of evidence.

Frank Gashumba has had several public altercations with his daughter, Sheila Gashumba over the years.

Gashumba disclosed in an interview that Sheila Gashumba’s mother is the driving force for her daughter’s carefree way of living. He claimed that Sheila was supposed to join the university following her senior year, but her mother intervened.

Gashumba’s scathing remarks started after Sheila’s mother intervened to save her after her father had allegedly beat her into a pulp and imprisoned her in her room for 12 hours due to returning home late one Saturday night with her drunk friends.

The drunk friends who accompanied her home humiliated Frank Gashumba over mistreating Sheila which further enraged him.

The daughter, inconsolable, allegedly called her mother Tinah Mukuza and told her that she was dying in her father’s locked room—even though she was meant to go to work at NTV’s Beat program.

Her mother hurried to the Kabalagala Police Station right away and complained of Gashumba’s acts, which caused the police to race to her aid.

When Sheila was brought to the Kabalagala Police Station to give a statement, she begged that the case not be reported to the public and informed them that she had forgiven her father.

Gashumba, however, broke his extended quiet to clarify on his social media platform that slapping was a parent’s method of discipline.

Despite Gashumba’s kindness for Aisha Nabukeera, many said that he had taken advantage of Nabukeera’s predicament to ask for donations, which he then utilized to purchase a Mercedes Benz.

Gashumba responded angrily to his critics, claiming that he had owned the Benz by the time he learned about Nabukeera.

In May 2023, Gashumba applied for the copyright of the slogan from the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), claiming that he was the one who came up with the creative interpretation of President Yoweri Museveni’s photo and the slogan “Omalako Jjaja, Tova Ku Main,” which was meant to persuade Museveni to run for reelection in 2026.

URSB received two objection applications from Namyalo and Kitatta opposing his application, both claiming ownership of the slogan. Still, none of the three could establish that they were the original creators of the slogan.

Gashumba has previously made claims based on slogans and logos from well-known firms. He had said that the song Pakasa by Vision group was his theme
