Rt. Lt. Gen Henry Tumukunde declares interest in the presidential seat
Tumukunde eyes Presidential seat – As the political pressure rises ahead of the 2021 general elections, more people are coming up expressing their interest in the presidential seat to battle with the incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Rt. Lt. Gen Henry Tumukunde yesterday in a letter addressed to the Electoral Commission (EC) notified them of his intentions to conduct National Wide consultations in preparation for his nominations as a presidential aspirant in the 2021 general elections.
Tumukunde notes that his consultations were focused on various interest groups purposely to facilitate decisions to stand for nominations’ as a presidential candidate in October this year.
EC confirmed receipt of Tumukunde’s letter which is per the law and promised to give their feedback as far as the letter is concerned.

Tumukunde’s declaration of interests in the top job follows unconfirmed reports quoted indicating that the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) withdraws all the 10 military guards from his homes in Kampala, Kiruhura and Rukungiri Districts.
Tumukunde now becomes the third military officer to run on the ballot paper along with their former commander in chief, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, after Rt. Col. Dr KIzza Besigye and the late Maj. Gen. Benon Biraro.

Over 20 presidential aspirants have so far been cleared by EC to start their national wide consultations and among them include; Hon Kyagulanyi Robert Ssentamu, Moses Mugisha, 2016 presidential candidate Elton Joseph Mabirizi, Timothy Mugerwa among others.
Tumukunde Quick Biography
Gen Henry Tumukunde is the retired military officer of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF).
He was born in 1959 in Rukungiri District, Western Region of Uganda.
He joined the National Resistance Army (NRA) struggle in 1981.
In 1995 he became the Member of Parliament representing the Army.
In 1998, he was appointed the Chief of Military Intelligence.
In 2005, he was forced to resign from Parliament and subsequently arrested on the orders of the president.
In 2013, the Army Commercial dropped his charges after he was tried in court with offences of abuse of office and spreading harmful propaganda. The abuse of office charges was eventually dropped in a manner suggesting that they had been politically motivated in the first instance.
In 2016, he was appointed the Minister for Security.
In 2018, Tumukunde was relieved of his cabinet responsibilities.
