Early Life and Education
Charles Ernest Hamya was born in 1973 in Uganda. He started dating Crusid Matovu in 2011 and eventually, they got married in 2016. The couple has children.
Charles went to Mengo Senior School, the oldest school in Uganda for his secondary education in 1985.
From 1993 to 1997, Charles studied a Bachelor of Commerce – BCom, (Accounting) from Makerere University.
He studied Pay Media at Naspers Academy and then Executive Development Training at Wits Business School.
He got his membership in FCCA from ACCA.
Career and Professional Work Experience
During the early 2000s, Charles Hamya worked as the Chief Accountant for MultiChoice Uganda Limited, a digital communications network provider. He progressed to the position of General Manager before becoming Managing Director and CEO.
Until his resignation in January 2019, he was the Managing Director of MultiChoice Uganda Limited.
He then took over as the current Executive Director of HCH Financial Services Limited in April 2019.
Charles Hamya also continues to serve as a special advisor to MultiChoice Uganda. He was afterwards appointed and is currently the Board Chairman of MultiChoice Uganda Limited.
He was a member of Uganda Airlines’ board of directors from May 2019 to 2022, when the board was suspended amid claims of underperformance, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement.
He resigned from the Uganda Airlines board in January 2022 after the shareholders cleared him of any wrongdoing.
Achievements and Awards
Charles Hamya is MultiChoice Uganda’s longest-serving General Manager.
Charles Hamya won the best guest player award at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa in May 2023, with a score of 39 points off handicap.
He is said to be one of the country’s wealthiest people. Charles Hamya’s monthly pay, without allowances, was reported to be more than USh50.7 million (about US$14,000) in 2015.
Charles Hamya is also the owner of Satellite Television and he ventured into Real Estate with Kololo Heights.
Controversies
Charles Hamya finally agreed to resign on March 31, 2019, under pressure from shareholders who saw his continued leadership as detrimental to the organisation.
Hamya’s wife, Ms Crusid Matovu, accused him of having an affair with his junior, DStv Marketing Manager Ms Phoebe Nakabazzi.
According to Crusid, Hamya and Nakabazzi decided to meet in Dubai for several days, and that information was confirmed in the attached email, in which Charles informed the hotel to check in Nakabazzi and charge the room which he would be checking into later to his personal account.
Ms Crusid’s email to MultiChoice employees in July 2018 sparked an uproar, with many asking for his resignation.
Hamya chose to fight back, informing his close associates that any attempt to push him out would be faced with heavy legal opposition.
However, after three months, he appeared to have changed his mind and announced his intention to resign.
