Due to mistreatment from his uncle, Bugingo was eventually forced to leave for Kampala as a teenager putting an end to his education journey.

When he arrived in Kampala, Bugingo found himself homeless at first. His friends sent him to Ssentongo Godfrey, who gave him a job in his home and a place to stay.

He spent some time working as a House Boy in Ssentongo’s home before Ssentongo hired him to make and sell popcorn at the Owino market.

Bugingo accumulated enough cash to launch his hawking enterprise in Kampala, where he sold home goods and women’s dressing robes.

He then relocated to Kazo, a Kampala suburb, where he rented a modest single room.

Marriage / Relationship

Bugingo married Teddy Naluswa in 1997. While together, they gave birth to three daughters, Doreen Gift, Winnie Treasure, and Jenifer Blessed Bugingo, and a son Miracle Bugingo.

When Bugingo openly accused Nasulwa of intending to kill him in May 2019, their relationship took a bad turn. This was also fueled by Bugingo and Susan Makula’s romance going public.

Bugingo claimed that Teddy had demanded a divorce in return for a share of the church’s assets. However, they did not officially get divorced.

In 2019, Bugingo proposed to Susan Makula at Namboole Stadium on his annual night of prayer for independence.

Their introduction took place in Kisubi, Wakiso district in 2021.

Susan Makula expecting first child

In February 2025, media reports suggested that Susan Makula, wife to Pastor Aloysius Bujjingo, is expecting a child — the couple’s first together.

The news was shared by media personality Kasuku, who claimed Makula was already four months into her pregnancy.

“Makula is pregnant,” he said. “Full Figure was the first on the news, and I did my research too. She’s four months pregnant and is doing her antenatal from Roswell.”

Makula and Pastor Bujjingo have been married for over three years.

Career and Professional Work Experience

At KPC (the current Watoto church) on Christmas Eve 1992, Bugingo experienced salvation after watching a Christian movie called Heaven’s Gates and Hell’s Flames.

Bugingo began working at Victory Christian Center Ndeeba as a church assistant in 1999. He oversaw praise and worship and organized the congregation.

His work impressed Victory Christian Centre Ndeeba’s main pastor, Joseph Sserwadda, who named him pastor.

Apart from his pastoral duties, Bugingo assumed additional responsibilities at Impact FM, a Christian talk radio station located in Ndeeba; which involved moderating religious shows like Manya Kyokiriza.

Bugingo was employed at Impact FM and Victory Christian Center until his resignation on December 31, 2010, defying Sserwadda’s demands.

Aloysius Bugingo and his wife Teddy started House of Prayer Ministry International (HPMI) after departing from Joseph Sserwadda. Their ministry had its start at Bat Valley Theatre.

In 2014, HPMI introduced Salt FM, and in 2015, Salt Television.

Both the church attendance and Salt Radio listeners grew gradually, with Bugingo’s noon prayer services seeing the most growth.

HPMI is currently located at Makerere, Kikoni, Kampala.

Controversies

Aloysius Bujingo has achieved a lot, but he has also been embroiled in controversy over his personal life and opinions on various social issues.

His views on politics, his divorce from his wife Teddy Bugingo, and his remarks regarding opposing political groups have all drawn criticism.

Bugingo has engaged in public conflicts with numerous other Kampala-based preachers. He’s been charged with attempting to defame the reputations of the other pastors to draw their flocks to his church.

In 2017, Bugingo stated that ‘Satanic’ Bibles (according to him, these are Bibles that refer to the Holy Spirit as the Holy Ghost) were to be burned.

Later, he was sued in court, but he refuted the allegations, claiming he was speaking of “spiritual” fire rather than actual fire.

Evangelist Francisco Semugooma and Aloysius Kizza Matovu sued Bugingo for burning Bibles in the Nabweru Magistrates Court.

As the presiding Judge stated, the accusers were unable to provide substantial proof that Bugingo had destroyed the Bibles, and the Bible fire they displayed revealed nothing about him. As a result, Bugingo won the case.

A High Court lawsuit alleging noise pollution was filed against Bugingo’s church in February 2019.

Gun attacks and police statements

On 2nd January 2024 at 9:00 pm, Aloysius Bugingo was hurt in an incident that claimed the life of his bodyguard and driver Cpl Richard Muhumuza, a skilled soldier in the Special Forces Command (SFC).

According to Rubaga Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Anderson Burora, the shooting occurred while Pastor Bugingo was traveling to his house and was taken to Mulago Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).

His vehicle registered as PRAIZ GOD, was ambushed by unidentified assailants at Bwalakata Junction along National Housing Road in Namungoona, Zone 2, Kasubi, Rubaga Division, Kampala.

The attackers quickly fled the scene on a motorcycle. Pastor Bugingo was hurt in the attack, but he was still able to get the car to Mulago Hospital.

More than ten bullets were fired at Bugingo’s automobile by the attacker(s), aiming for the co-driver.

The officers at the scene of the incident stated that they had only found four gunshot shells. It is noteworthy that the police said there had been tampering at the crime site.

On social media, many Ugandans have questioned how the pastor survived the 9 p.m. attack, much less drive himself to Mulago Hospital from the scene, which is around 6 kilometres away from Bwalakata intersection.

The precise location of Bugingo’s injuries has also been the subject of multiple contradictory stories.

Close friend and first son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba reported that he had spoken with Bugingo earlier and that he had informed him of a minor injury to his left shoulder.

Charles James Ssenkubuge, the director general manager of Salt Media, refuted Muhoozi’s claim that Bugingo was shot in the back in a brief statement to the media.

Forensic specialists have determined that the same handgun used to assassinate vlogger Isma Olaxes, also known as Isma Tusubira, last year was also used to shoot Pastor Aloysius Bugingo.

In the meantime, Bugingo’s car was relocated to the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) in Kibuli from the Directorate of Forensic Science (DFS) at the Naguru police headquarters.

It was driven by a police officer to the CID headquarters, where Senior Commissioner of Police (SCP) Beata Chelimo is in charge of the investigations.

Drama, however, broke out when top CID officers questioned who gave the go-ahead for the car to be moved to their offices without the director’s approval.

It was decided that Pr Bugingo’s car, which has eleven obvious gunshot holes, should be given to the Inspector of Vehicles Officer (IOV) at Old Kampala due to arguments about who should keep it.

To learn the complete facts about the botched assassination, investigators have gathered seven CCTV tapes from Salt Media locations, police surveillance cameras on the street, and cameras on private buildings. And the investigations are still ongoing to identify the assailants.
