Who will win this year's Afcon golden boot?

Ighalo, Mane and Mahrez in the race for 2019 AFCON golden boot

With only days left to the closure of 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations tournament, the race for the Afcon golden boot is still on the wire as many top players are still in contention for this year’s award.

Who will win this year’s Afcon golden boot?

Top Scorers

Odion Ighalo (Nigeria) – 4
Sadio Mane (Senegal) – 3
Adam Ounas (Algeria) – 3
Cedric Bakambu (DR Congo) – 3
Riyad Mahrez (Algeria) – 3

Odion Ighalo’s successful converted penalty against Algeria on Sunday 14th July pulled him clear of the chasing pack as the tournament’s leading goalscorer on four goals.

Meanwhile, Riyard Mahrez’s perfectly curled free kick on the edge of the box also took him level to three goals together with his teammate Adam Ounas and Senegal’s Sadio Mane.

However, now that Nigeria is out of the tournament after their loss to Algeria, Odion Ighalo’s goal tally will end on four goals.

Meaning, Mahrez, Ounas and Senegal’s Mane are just one goal behind first placed Ighalo in the race of Afcon 2019’s golden boot- A goal for either of the three will take them top of the chart.

Appropriately, Algeria will face Senegal in the final on Friday 19th July.

Senegal narrowly beat Tunisia by a goal to nil through a Dylan Bronn own goal to reach the final while Algeria secured a 95th-minute 2-1 win against defensive side Nigeria.

With Friday’s encounter in much contention to determine who will be top Scorer of this year’s Afcon, it is set to be a thrilling final as notable contenders will be looking to grab this award for themselves.

Ounas, with his lightning pace and impact from the bench, Mahrez with his dead-ball prowess delicate dribbling, and Mane, with his devilish trickery, will all play key roles for their respective sides in the final.
