Three in a race to replace retired Chief Justice Bart Katureebe: Yesterday was the last day of Justice Bart Katureebe in office who sought not to extend his stay in office.

Justice Bart Katureebe will be retiring today, June 20 on his 70th birthday and is the official retirement age.

In a statement released on Friday, Justice Bart Katureebe says it has been an honour and privilege to serve as a chief judge and urged all members to serve and support the incoming chief justice.

“I wish to take this opportunity to thank you collectively and individually for cooperation and support you have shown me, I am retiring from judicial service as the Chief Judge. I also want to thank the judiciary institution during my tenure in office for the support. It has been indeed a great privilege and honour to work with you all,” Katureebe noted.

“I believe that we have registered some achievements together in the administration of justice in the country. I would recommend you extend the same support to the in-coming Chief Justice,” Katureebe added.

While occupying his seat as the Chief Judge for the last time at Judiciary headquarters in Kampala, Justice Katureebe said to some of his staff and he had retired and he was going home.

“I am retiring and going home,” Chief Judge said to his staff.

The outgoing Chief Judge added he wanted to show that people can retire and go home. He added that he was winding up for the new person who was going to come in. he added that he will be coming to Kampala as a visitor.

Justice Bart Katureebe was given two more appeal cases to handle before retiring. The cases include; Patrick Kaumba Wiltshire Vs Ismail Dabule and Kamo Enterprises Ltd Vs Krystaline Salt Ltd.

The list of names proposed to President Museveni that might replace Katureebe as Chief Justice include; the Deputy Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo, Richard Buteera and Esther Kisakye Mayambala.

Katureebe added that from Sunday the Deputy Chief Justice will be the acting since technically he leaves office on Saturday 20th June midnight. He added that after that he will not be able to say anything.

During his tenure as the Chief Justice, a lot of changes have been introduced in courts like the electronic court case system which allows court hearing to proceed without criminals coming directly in the courts. The terms and conditions of judicial officers have improved during his tenure.

Katureebe said he feels satisfied that some achievements have been made during his tenure but he acknowledged that a lot has to be done and particularly in the reduction of case backlog.
