The National Unity platform party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine has lashed out at the police over the arrest of Makerere Guild president Ivan Ssempijja saying that it is a sign that the regime is a coward.
On Monday, Makerere University Students Guild president, Ivan Ssempijja and a couple of other students were arrested as they attempted to march to the education ministry offices to deliver their petition seeking to address the challenges are facing as they undertake online lectures.
In the petition dated 26 July 2021, the Guild president demands a revision on functional fees which are attached to the fees students pay per academic year.
Ssempijja also demands that government halts the 12% internet tax to make it possible for learners to access online studies.
Subsequently, he also wants the University to consider suspending the 15% cumulative tuition increment fees which are usually charged in case one delay paying a certain amount of fees within a specific time frame.

However, in a statement via his social media handle, Kyagulanyi has said the Guild’s arrest is a clear indication that the regime is scared of anyone who comes out to peacefully preach about their evil deeds.
“I have learnt of the arrest of Makerere University Guild President, comrade Ivan Sempijja, together with his Deputy as well as two other students’ leaders. These comrades were arrested in Kampala today as they walked towards the ministry of education to deliver a petition about critical issues which affect students and parents. Their demands were as follows:
“Removal of Functional Fees for students in light of COVID Pandemic. Reversal of 12% internet tax to facilitate ease of accessibility to learning. Halting the 15% cumulative tuition increment policy. A comprehensive plan for full reopening of University for physical learning to continue, including a clear plan for mass vaccination of students,” Bobi Wine wrote.
