The name “Bwana Tembo” is derived from the Kiswahili language and means “Sir Elephant” or “Master Elephant”. Various herds of elephants visited the location during construction, leading to the camp’s naming after these roving four-legged gentle giants.
Until now, these majestic animals have primarily visited the premises at night and departed early in the morning.

Activities at Bwana Tembo Safari Camp
Village Walk
Village walks can be coordinated with another organization.
Typically, the destination is a tiny village or community near Pakwach Town. This is a terrific experience for those interested in culture and observing how the local community lives.
Game drive
Bwana Tembo Safari Camp offers game viewing excursions inside Murchison Falls National Park. Half-day driving costs US$120 per vehicle while Full-day driving costs US$200 per vehicle.
Please note that the client and vehicle entry fee to the park is not included in the above prices.
You can rent a Land Rover Defender for your game drives. This vehicle has room for 11 people, with plenty of room for luggage and passengers. This is best rented by large groups during the dry season.
The camp also hires out a few Land Cruisers with retractable roofs as well. Four people can comfortably fit in there.
During the morning and afternoon, you can spot several wild animals. For example, giraffes, Jackson’s hartebeest, elephants, bushbucks, and lions.
During night game drives, you can spot nocturnal animals, including leopards, bush babies, genets, hyenas, civets and porcupines.
Birding
Murchison Falls National Park is home to a wide variety of bird species, including the open-billed stork, red-throated bee-eater, widow bird, silver bird, Abyssinian ground hornbill, grey crowned crane, saddle-billed stork, malachite kingfisher, yellow-fronted tinker bird, giant heron, grey-headed kingfisher, and a martial eagle.
Birds can be spotted on nature walks through the savanna grasslands, on a boat cruise along the Nile and on a game drive.
You should bring binoculars, sunglasses, a hat, a birding guidebook, sturdy shoes, a pointer, plenty of water, and food for a day out in the park to watch birds.
Take a boat tour to the base of Murchison Falls
For a unique adventure, take a boat ride to the base of the falls or to the Victoria Nile delta that reaches all the way to Lake Albert. There are two distinct itineraries for boat tours. The day typically starts at 9 a.m. and the afternoon at 2 p.m.
Hippopotamuses, crocodiles, elephants, waterbucks, giraffes, buffaloes, kobs, and waterbucks are just some of the animals you might see on a boat tour.
Numerous species of waterbirds can be seen, including the African fish eagle, Abyssinian hornbill, African jacana, saddle-billed stork, dwarf kingfisher, African skimmer, and Chapin flycatcher.
Sport fishing
During your stay at Bwana Tembo Safari Camp, you can enjoy a day of sport fishing in Murchison Falls National Park. Fish like the Nile Perch, Tiger Fish, Catfish, and Nile Tilapia can all be caught at the falls’ base.
The fish you catch are yours to keep as a memento of the event. Many different kinds of birds and animals, such as the Blue Quail, the Lesser Swamp Warbler, the Great Swamp Warbler, the Common Squacco, the White-headed and Black-billed Barbet, the Greenwood Hoopoe, the Blue-breasted Shining-blue Kingfisher, the Striated and Black-headed Herons, and many others, can be seen during this activity.
It’s common to spot kingfishers and other animals drinking water from the shores and banks of rivers.
Chimpanzee tracking
Chimpanzee tracking is at its best during the dry months of June through September and December through February. The wet season is from March through May and November, but you can still enjoy the park during those months.

By road
Bwana Tembo Safari Camp is 345km from Kampala. To get there, take the Kampala-Gulu highway via Luweero and go past the Karuma bridge to Pakwach.
At this point, you are about 285km from Kampala. Turn left onto the Karuma-Pakwach road and continue to Bwana Tembo Road. Turn right onto Bwana Tembo Road and continue to Bwana Tembo Safari Camp.
By air
Pakuba airstrip is the nearest airstrip to Bwana Tembo Safari Camp. The airstrip works 4 times weekly (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday).
It is a 1-hour flight from Entebbe to Pakuba airstrip. From here, it is a 50-minute drive to the camp.
