Former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has advised Jessica Alupo to always heed the orders of the president.

The former Vice President of Uganda Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has urged the incoming candidate Jessica Alupo to always take the president’s orders with caution.

Ssekandi made the remarks shortly after handing over office to Alupo, who was recently appointed Vice President by President Museveni.

He said given the nature of the Vice President’s office, Alupo’s major role is to help Museveni fulfil his promises to the people of Uganda.

Ssekandi however, reminded Alupo that during her tenure she might encounter a few challenges including not being at per with the President but said she should always be ready to reconcile and move on.

“Given the nature of the office, she should help the president to fulfil his promises to the people of Uganda,” Ssekandi said.

“You should try your best to do the best and if you have made a mistake, try to correct it and go and apologise and then you move forward. Basically I want her to use her energy and knowledge to do the best for the country.”

Alupo who was once an education minister is now the current Vice President and the fifth person to ever hold the position during Museveni’s 35-year rule. She replaces Ssekandi who has served in the position for the last ten years.

Speaking about his tenure, the outgoing Ssekandi thanked the president for giving him a chance to serve the nation. He also sent his regards to the people of Bukoto Central in Masaka for the trust they put in him as their legislative leader.

In her statement, however, Alupo said on top of empowering fellow women, she will work to wipe out the increasing levels of corruption throughout the whole country.

The incoming Vice President also pledged to drive the country to a middle-income status through spearheading the further development of sectors including agriculture, technology and industrialisation.

“I would like all the women of Uganda to own this honour that His Excellency has given us as women and use it as an instrument of social economic transformation together with men. We shall not work in isolation,” Alupo said.

“We are moving towards monetising the economy and when we monetise our economy fully, you and I know that we shall create more jobs. We shall enhance the production of more goods and services. We shall grow our technology and consequently widen our tax base and that will help boost our economy,” she added.
