Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi is a Ugandan businesswoman, politician, former Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs in the Cabinet of Uganda.
She was appointed to that position on 6 June 2016. She also served as the Federation of Uganda Football Associations third Vice-President, the first woman to hold that position in Uganda voted to that position in 2017.
Also, Nakiwala served as the Chairperson Commonwealth Youth Minister Task Force voted to that position in 2017.
Early Life and Education
Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi was born in 1972, in Kimanya, Masaka District, to the late Charles Ssonko and Perepetwa Najjuma. She is the 8th born of their 12 children.
Her father was the County Chief of Buddu at that time.
Nakiwala attended Kimanya Primary School before she was admitted to Trinity College Nabbingo for her O-Level and A-Level education.
While at Nabbingo, she served as the sanitary prefect.
Nakiwala then joined Makerere University, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree.
While there, she was elected to the executive committee of Nkoba Za Mbogo, the Buganda student’s organization at Makerere University Kampala, the oldest institution in Uganda.
Nakiwala while at Makerere University also served as the leader of the commerce students in her class. That means she was born a leader.
Work and Experience
In her teenage age, Nakiwala took a trip to London and witnessed how a well-run health facility operates and got inspired to start one at one point in her life.
She established Lisa Medical Centre, a chain of clinics and short-stay hospitals in Uganda, with a branch in Nairobi, Kenya.
She served as the Minister for Youth in the Buganda Kingdom, for five years, Tourism Minister in the kingdom, a position Nakiwala held until June 2016.
During the 2016 general elections, Florence Nakiwala contested for the Kampala Woman Representative seat in the 10th parliament (2016-2021). She ran on the Democratic Party (DP) ticket, but she lost to the incumbent, Nabilah Naggayi Sempala of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) political party.
However, regardless of her loss, President Yoweri Museveni surprisingly appointed Nakiwala Minister of State for Youth and Children, on 6 June 2016.
Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi is married to Deogratius Kiyingi since 1998.
In her first year at Makerere University, Nakiwala met and eventually fell in love with her husband, Deogratius Kiyingi, the Member of Parliament for Bukomasimbi South Constituency in the 10th Parliament 2016-2021.
They both belong to the Roman Catholic faith. Together, they are parents to five children, three boys and two girls
