George William Thembo Nyombi is a Ugandan economist, politician and the former State Minister for Information Technology in the Ugandan Cabinet.
He was appointed to that position on 27 May 2011 replacing Alintuma Nsambu who was dropped from Cabinet.
Currently, Nyombi is the Director of the Rural Communications Development Fund (RCDF) at the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).
Early Life and Education
George William Nyombi Thembo was born on 31 July 1964 in Mubende District to a family of thirteen children. He was born to Erisa Zziwa Bosomungho from the Ndomboli royal family in Zenzeka, Boma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Eseza Ziribasanga, a Congolese woman as well.
His parents settled in the present-day Mubende District, Kassanda, Singo County in 1924. They migrated to Uganda as a result of social and political upheavals in the DRC.
Nyombi went to Lubiri Secondary School in Kampala where he attained his O’ & A’ Level Certificates. Thereafter, Nyombi joined Makerere University Kampala where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
He as well holds a diploma in project planning and management from Bradford University in the United Kingdom (UK).
In addition to the above qualifications, Nyombi holds a postgraduate diploma in financial management and a Master of Science Degree in Development Economics from Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) in Uganda.
Work and Experience
1990-1996, Thembo Nyombi worked at Uphill College as a part-time economics teacher, a secondary school based in Uganda.
In the 1990s, Nyombi worked as an analyst, planning officer and senior planning officer for the Uganda Railways Corporation.
1995-2001, Nyombi worked as a Project Manager for Transport Rehabilitation Project (Railway Component), at Kampala City Council.
Then in 2001, Nyombi got elected to Parliament as a Member of Parliament representing Kassanda County South, Mubende District on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket.
And in the same year, he got appointed as Minister for Education and Sport in charge of Primary Education.
In 2006, Nyombi was re-elected to Parliament and got appointed as the State Minister for Luweero Triangle in the Office of the Prime Minister from 2009-2011.
Nyombi was again re-elected to Parliament in the 2011 parliamentary elections and appointed Minister of State for Information Technology in the Ugandan Cabinet. He was appointed to the position on 27 May 2011 replacing Alintuma Nsambu, who was dropped from the cabinet.
However, Nyombi lost the 2021 parliamentary election and is currently serving as the Director Rural Communications Development Fund (RCDF) at the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).
Family
George WilliamThembo Nyombi was married to Prisca Mashengyero Thembo on Saturday, 28 July 2012. The two got married in the evening at about 10 pm.
However, she died in an accident after her car got struck by another car at Bwebajja along the Kampala-Entebbe Highway.
Following his first wife’s death, Nyombi remarried in 2016 after a period of co-habiting.
He got married to Angella Naggayi Thembo and together they have children.
