The bodyguard and driver of Jesse Byaruhanga Rugyema, a judge attached to Mbale High court have been arrested over death of Innocent Ayesigye, a Seeta traffic police officer.
The bodyguard and driver of Mbale High court judge Jesse Byaruhanga Rugyema have been arrested to help in the investigations into an accident involving a traffic police officer who was knocked down on Sunday evening.
Innocent Ayesigye a traffic police officer attached to Seeta Police station was on Sunday evening knocked down by a Toyota RaV4 registration number UAS 597U. The police officer was riding a motorcycle at Namanve along the Kampala-JInja highway on Sunday evening.
“He was rammed into by the driver of a motor vehicle which was white in colour from behind, it threw him into an oncoming motor vehicle UBG 896E blue in colour,” Luke Owoyesigyire the Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesperson said.
He later succumbed to the accident after suffering broken legs and arms on a Tuesday morning at Rubaga hospital where he had been taken for treatment after the accident.
After the accident, the vehicle drove off but according to the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera, the individuals in the vehicle were being guarded by a police officer.
Some sources say that the Mbale high court was driving the vehicle on that fateful day.
“One Byaruhanga Jesse Rugyema, Mbale high court judge was the one driving the motor vehicle on the day our traffic officer was knocked,” a certain police source said.
“The driver and the police officer have been arrested to help in the investigations,” the police source added.
Sources also reveal that judge Byaruhanga Jesse on Wednesday afternoon appeared at the police headquarters in Naguru to resolve matters surrounding the police officer’s death.
Police shared pictures of the Toyota RV4 on its social media pages asking the general population to help them identify the owner of the vehicle that had knocked down the police officer constable Ayesigye.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson had earlier said that the occupants of the vehicle had appeared at Seeta police station.
“The driver of this car REG. NO. UAS 597u and his co-driver have reported themselves to Seeta police station. They knocked down our traffic office Ayesigye Innocent on Sunday evening at Namanve and didn’t stop .we are charging them with three counts; reckless driving, causing death through reckless driving and failing to report an accident,” Onyango said the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson.
The judge driver has been identified as Zimba Aminsi, 32 a resident of Salama and the police bodyguard was identified as Alex Oduku who is attached to Very Important Persons Protection unit. (VIPPU)
