Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has announced that she is focusing her attention on retaining the speakership position.

The Speaker of the 10th Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has disclosed that her focus is now switched on retaining the speakership position.

Kadaga made the remarks on Tuesday shortly after swearing-in for another term as the Woman Representative for Kamuli District.

She revealed that much as some people think she has overstayed on the speakership post, she still can perform even do better than she has done in previous parliaments.

Kadaga who was responding to a question from one journalist maintained that if she is elected for a third term as the speaker, she will continue working towards improving MP facilities at Parliament.

This, however, comes at a time when the Central Executive Committee of the National Resistance Movement party earlier this week decided that it will hold vetting for all candidates vying for the office of the speaker and deputy speaker of Parliament.

The Committee also outlined the NRM parliamentary caucus rules for the elections of the two positions.

“The meeting was Adjourned to 22nd May when it will vet candidates for office of the speaker and deputy speaker of Parliament and forward their decision to the NRM parliamentary caucus at its first sitting of 23rd May 2021,” part of the statement from CEC confirmed.

It added: “Further it extended the term of office of the executive committees of all NRM structures, special interest groups and the specially nominated members of CEC for 6 months from 20th May to 20th November.”

Meanwhile, the vetting will be held at the Kololo independence grounds on Saturday ahead of the speaker elections set for Monday, May, 24.

For the past weeks, there has been a disagreement among members of the ruling party on who to side with within the parliamentary speakership race.

In his recent interviews, Jacob Oulanyah who is vying to take over from his former boss in the 10th parliament says he is the rightful candidate after an agreement the party made to allow Kadaga to complete her 10-year tenure.

Kadaga however, vividly says such an agreement has never been done. She will be looking to a third term as the parliament’s speaker.
