In the latest statement, the Education Ministry has confirmed that students in semi candidates classes will be allowed to return to school in the coming weeks.
Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 in the country, the education centre is one those that have since been hit terribly. From last year schools have only been allowed to reopen for those in candidate classes.
With fears that the situation might push on even for the bigger part of this year, the Cabinet has approved the recommendation to have students in P6, S3 and S5 report back to school in the short term and study in shifts where necessary.
Following a cabinet meeting that sat at State House Entebbe on Monday 1st February 2021, the Ministry of Education was challenged to present a report with its recommendations for the reopening of Education Institutions to non-candidate learners.
About the document that is making rounds on social media, it was disclosed that when candidates conclude their final exams, there will be enough space in schools to host a fresh group of students.
“Given that PLE will be completed on 31st March, 2021 and UCE on 6th April, 2021, there will be more space in schools, when candidates leave, this will enable other classes to return and study to complement the home schooling that they are currently having,” part of a letter from the Cabinet read.
The Cabinet also gave a go-ahead for Universities and Institutions of learning to resume provided they also observe the necessary guidelines.
“Technical institutions, Primary Teachers College and the National Teachers College have also been allowed to open in the short run because these have the necessary enlightenment and equipments to enable them to learn safely,” the Cabinet added.

However, it stressed that students in the pre-primary section will remain operating from home because it is hard for them to observe all the COVID-19 SOPs.
Noting further, the Cabinet tasked the necessary authorities including the police to undertake a countrywide tour around schools and institutions to ensure that they all match the requirements for reopening.
Meanwhile, Ofwono Opondo the government spokesperson also confirmed the ruling but stressed that schools will be allowed to host the students back in a manner that is in line with the Standard Operating Procedures aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus.
