MP Nsereko asks Dr Besigye to tell Ugandans early enough whether he will stand for the presidency in 2021 or not

As the 2021 general elections pressure rises, MP Muhammad Nsereko has asked Dr Kizza Besigye Kiffefe, the four-time presidential candidate, former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and the leader People’s Government to announce whether he intends to contest for presidency in the coming elections or not, early enough.

During a media interview on Monday 30th, December 2019, Nsereko decided to ask Dr Besigye to declares his intentions early, it will help unite the opposition which is currently facing divisionism.

He adds that no one will condemn Besigye if he still wants to run for the presidency because what they want is to liberate Uganda.

“I am going to tell Besigye that we are stronger together and the issue ahead of us is the completion of the struggle. No one is kicking him out of the struggle,” Nsereko said. “If he still wants to be a presidential candidate, he needs to let the country know early.”

Nsereko in his point of view said if the opposition ballot is divided, it will open opportunities for the incumbent, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of National Resistance Movement (NRM) to win the 2021 general elections.

“There are very many challenges within the opposition, and every opportunity to come up with a united opposition front has been thwarted by internal politics,” Nsereko said.

He adds that;

“This issue of jumping on every bandwagon that comes will not take us anywhere. When you consistently carry on a message that does not yield results, you get hatred from the backlash.”

Also, Nsereko said that no single opposition presidential candidate can win the coming election if they are stand divided.

So as a result, they need to unite and front one candidate, if they are to take over from the incumbent.

“There is nothing too late in a struggle. We still have over 12 months to go. Whether it is Besigye or Kyagulanyi, none of them can single-handedly win the action. The stronghold will be split and I can assure you that the incumbent will win.”

Earlier, Dr Besigye during his address at the FDC Party’s 16th-anniversary celebrations that happened on Monday 16th December 2019, lashed out at his critics who said he should retire from politics to pave way for other opposition politicians to challenge the incumbent in the coming 2021 general elections.

But Besigye responded by saying that he cannot step out of the liberation struggle because he is fighting for his freedom.

Besigye says his mission is not to be a leader but to be in a free country where he can walk with “swag”.

Also during his end of the year press conference, Besigye called for unity and togetherness among opposition members ahead of the 2021 general elections.

In his address, Besigye announced that 2020 will be a year of fighting for human rights and causing a change in Uganda.

He, however, urged opposition members who want to change in this country to shun internal conflicts and work together if at all they are to win the coming elections.

“The effort of seeing our work together is ongoing. All those who want change, we need to work together and solve our problems, “said Besigye.

Further, Besigye said that their major focus next year will be uniting opposition ahead of the elections.

“We have regime agents who are infiltrating our people wanting to cause conflicts, confusion so that instead of focussing on where the problem is, we start focussing on ourselves,” said Besigye.

After, Besigye offered a piece of advice to opposition players to always stay strong and firm when provoked.

Besigye was then tasked to tell Ugandans whether he will stand for the presidency in the coming 2021 elections or not.

But in his response, he said that that is his deal because he is not hungry for power.

“I have always said once this struggle is over, I will not seek an elective position in this country. I have never been in the struggle for leadership. I am in the struggle for equal rights,” Besigye said.

At the start of 2019, Besigye and People’s Government announced it a year of action purposely to bring about change in Uganda. But according to Besigye, only a few things have been accomplished.

“Many people of our detractors don’t understand the year of action and what it meant. Indeed, part of the actions that are underway this year was to challenge that very Electoral Commission which is organising elections where there are no constituencies,” Besigye noted.

Besigye who held his end-year conference at his house in Kasangati along Gayaza road then declared that 2020 will be a year of double action and stepping up the fight against human rights violations in Uganda.

“If you stand in the way of our tights, we shall push you until there is respect for every Ugandan,” Besigye said.
