MTN Group Limited launched MTN in 1994 to be its multinational telecommunication group. It operates in more than 21 countries in Africa including Uganda and the Middle East as its core operations area. 

It was unbelievable to see MTN grow faster with over 90,700,000 subscribers as of December 2008. 

In 1998 all the MTN commercial services in Uganda was launched, October 1998 just six months after the group acquired and signed its license.  

Despite insufficient infrastructure to mention power and roads, MTN has gone as far as covering more than 90% of the urban population, providing services in over 150 towns and villages and their immediate environments, making MTN grow to be the leading Telecommunication Company in Uganda servicing over 3,500,000 customers.

Services and Products

MTN Uganda was able to install over 2500 payphones commonly known as fixed and mobile wireless telecommunication services in less than 24 months and the demand for these is growing. 

The above payphones use wireless technology as its operating system; these phones can be able to make both local and international calls.

Together MTN and Grameen Foundation set up village phones to provide affordable telecommunication services in rural areas.

Due to faster development, MTN covers over 52 districts capitals and over 150 towns that are considered to have more of the large Network coverage to mention Kisoro (Rwanda border), Busia to Malaba at the Kenya border to Aura and Koboko at the Sudan and Congo border via Kabale and Kisoro at most Rwanda border.

MTN has gone as far as installing high technology equipment at all its base station in the country, which continues to support networks in Uganda for all MTN customers or users.

“Three large capacity switches with complete back up guarantee that the network operates smoothly all year round and the same technology is able to support all value- added services that MTN offers to its customers like voice mail, messages , data bundles, to mention but afew”. This technology is supported or provided by Ericsson that caters for all MTN Technical infrastructures.

Uganda today has the biggest MTN customer services centre offering the largest language preference base and extended hours of operations. This, therefore, followed the establishment of customer services points such as Shoprite Ben Kiwanuka street, Lugogo mall, General Post Office, Crested Towers, Kikuubo branch, Jinja and in Mbarara.

With an effort to be unique MTN offers customer care to over 19 local and international languages when customers call the 123 helplines for prepaid customers or 121 for postpaid queries.

Number of Employees

To build Uganda and cap down the high rates of unemployment in the country MTN Uganda under the management of MTN Group has today employed 300+ employees in Uganda.

Financial Information

For the past many years of operations, MTN was able to generate 5 billion up to 40 per cent since December 2007 with a massive Uganda Revenue contribution of (RM):3523000.

MTNs growth is due to the three pillars it laid, these pillars have helped MTN to set up a good business strategy. These pillars are Convergence and Operational Evolutions, Leveraging footprint and intellectual Capacity and Consolidation and Diversification.

Though MTN estimates that, the mobile telephony market in its footprint will grow to over 381+million in the next years from 220+ million which will make MTN remain highly competitive in all its markets as it looks at significant future growth opportunities.

Benefits Offered and Relations with Government

Since the establishment of MTN in Uganda, its growth has significantly contributed to the Government of Uganda, “MTN has adopted a wireless approach to providing telecommunication services to the Uganda market proven to be fast, reliable and convenient.

The company paid initial license fees of US$5.8 million and an annual spectrum fee of 1% of network revenue payable as a contribution to the rural communications Development fund.

 MTN funds UCC by a levy on operators Gross Annual Revenues. The Uganda communications commission is known for regulating telecommunications, broadcasting and postal services. The UCC is accountable to parliament and ministry of ICT.

Product Development

MTN during its transformation in technology, it was able to successfully launch of mobile money transfer (MMT) in Uganda which marked the beginning of a series of planned launches across its operations in Africa and the Middle East.

The above product, MTN Mobile Money, is a convenient, secure and affordable way for MTN subscribers to send money, buy airtime, buy data and pay bills using their cell phones.

Therefore it is to note that MTN is one of the biggest corporate private companies in Uganda that has contributed greatly to the Ugandans economy.
