Museveni said ‘’I get surprised when I hear some people talking about democracy in the world. There is no country more democratic than Uganda.’’

While delivering a speech at the International Day for Older Persons in a function held at the State House Entebbe on Thursday, President Yoweri Museveni said that Uganda is the most democratic country in the entire world.

The President’s remarks come at a time when a section of opposition politicians have in recent weeks cited forms of vote-rigging in the just concluded National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries to determine their flag bearers for various parliamentary positions.

The politicians in particular cited out an incident in Rushenyi County where Kabasharira had beaten fellow NRM candidate, Minister Rukutana to the ticket but days later the party Electoral Commission overturned the results to declare Rukutana as the victor on 25,310 votes, 20 more than Kabasharira who claimed a total of 25290 votes.

However, the President in response to such claims by Ugandans said that he is surprised to hear many individuals describing Uganda as an undemocratic country without basing on factual information.

‘’I get surprised when I hear some people talking about democracy in the world. There is no country more democratic than Uganda,’’ Museveni said before adding that Uganda is also among the countries of the world which are described as underdeveloped.

But he explained that being undeveloped means there is unutilized potential. Museveni who was first to relate his argument to someone making banana juice mentioned that government is still focused on shaping the future of Ugandans.

‘’There was a problem of lack of literacy by 1986. The literacy rate was like 40% and I now know its 75%. Underdeveloped means there is a potential which isn’t developed. When you make banana juice, there is the first concentrated one you get, but you don’t throw away the grass.’’

The President also, said that Uganda has over the years faced the problem of the market even though many individuals are now largely engaging in local production and manufacture of goods.

‘’If all homesteads produce wealth, where shall we sell the produce? There is a problem of market, and that is what takes us to East Africa.’’
