Justine Kasule Lumumba, Secretary-General of the NRM party, called on newly-elected leaders to get to work to lay the foundation for socio-economic development in‌ ‌the‌ ‌country.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party Secretary General, Justine Kasule Lumumba has urged newly-elected leaders to get to business and work to lay a firm and strong foundation for the socio-economic transformation of the country.

Lumumba made the remarks in a statement via her social media platform. She said leaders, irrespective of their political affiliation and persuasion must perform to satisfy their voters.

“I take this opportunity to appeal to Ugandans at large but specifically to those leaders who participated in the electoral process; to now get down to hard work so as to lay a firm and strong foundation for the socio-economic transformation of the country, during this kisanjja,” Lumumba said.

“Ugandans have entrusted you with leadership positions at all levels in the country, to develop mechanisms for conflict resolution; whether through mediation, reconciliation or arbitration etc; in order to promote unity and cohesion in the country; because it is only when a county is purposefully united, that the implementation of Government Programmes and i.e. the process of socio-economic transformation, can be fast-tracked,” she added.

Lumumba however, thanked Ugandans for exercising their constitutional rights by participating in electing their leaders in the recently concluded 2020/21 national Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government elections.

Relatively, she applauded all those who came out victorious in the just concluded elections. Lumumba in particular cited the NRM party saying that it garnered more victories as compared to those in other parties.

Of the 61 Members of Parliament elected as “Independents”, 56 Members are leaning to the National Resistance Movement, having participated in the NRM primaries.”

“The National Resistance Movement also boasts of having 91 Chairpersons of District Local Governments out of a total of 146 positions that were competed for, during the recently concluded elections. This reflects a command of 62.3%. Additionally, 22 of the District Chairpersons are “Independents” affiliated with the National Resistance Movement,” she noted.

Going forward, Lumumba however, reminded that the COVID-19 pandemic is still fast spreading. She urged Ugandans not to relax the measures in place including washing hands, wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.

“Fellow Citizens, you are aware that the 2nd Phase of the COVID-19 pandemic is with us in Uganda. The medical experts have advised that this phase is more lethal and fatal in terms of casualties. We are advised that the ICUs of Mulago and most Government and private medical facilities are already full and over-flowing.”

“I, therefore, appeal to Ugandans, especially the politicians involved in celebrating their victories to do so in strict compliance with the Standard Operating Procedures as guided by the Scientists; so as not to put the people of Uganda at risk of contracting and spreading the COVID-19 pandemic,” Lumumba urged.
