Among the 2021 BET Awards nominees announced today is Megan Thee Stallion and DaBaby, both with seven nominations, and Diamond Platnumz is the only East African entrant.
BET Awards 2021 nominees were announced today, with Megan Thee Stallion and DaBaby leading the pack with seven nods each and Diamond Platnumz as the only East African nominee.
It is Diamond Platnumz’s third BET award nomination, having been nominated in 2014 and 2016.
Rayvanny’s victory in 2017 earned him “The BET Viewer’s Choice Best International Act” recognition, making him the first artist from Tanzania to win a BET Award.
It makes Rayvanny the second artist from East Africa to win a BET Award following Uganda’s Eddy Kenzo‘s 2015 International Viewers Award.
The competition for Best International Act will also feature Aya Nakamura from France, Burna Boy and Wizkid from Nigeria, Emicida (Brazil), Headie One (UK), Young T & Bugsey (UK) and Youssoupha (France).
The last two winners were Burna Boy and Wizkid, back when the category had two divisions for the UK and Africa. Burna Boy and Wizkid won the Best Global Music Album and Best Music Video categories at the 2021 Grammy Awards, respectively.
‘Brown Skin Girl’ won Wizkid the BET HER Award in 2020.
A total of 21 categories are recognized, celebrating black music’s present and future, elevating the culture, and helping to drive social change.
As executive vice-president and chief of specials, music programming and music strategy for BET Networks, Connie Orlando said, “We are thrilled to bring culture’s biggest night safely back to Los Angeles.”
”With the return of an audience, we are ready to elevate our pioneer status to the next level by celebrating the best and brightest creative minds across the entertainment industry.”
This year’s BET Awards will be live on BET on Sunday, June 27th at 8 p.m ET/PT. The show was a virtual event last year during the covid-19 pandemic.
