People Power asks police to release the CCTV footage of the two incidents that claimed the lives of their supporters

People Power pressure group activists have tasked the Police to release the CCTV footage of the two incidents that claimed lives of their two supporters that’s Rita Nabukenya whom People Power claims was knocked by the Police patrol van around Nakawa and Kyeyune who was shot by a Police officer in Nansana as they waited along the road for Bobi Wine who was returning from Nabukenya’s burial.

This follows contradictory statements given by Police regarding the death of both Nabukenya and Kyeyune regarding the performance of CCTV Cameras on the fateful days.

Soon after the accident that claimed Nabukenya’s life, the Assistant Inspector General of Police Asan Kasingye took to social media saying that he had watched a CCTV video where two boda bodas collided resulting into her death.

“We demand that the Uganda Police produces footage of the CCTV Cameras around Nakawa a suburb where Rita was murdered and Nansana where the late Kyeyune was murdered in cold blood,” Flavia Kalule, chairperson Women League People Power said.

Deputy Police spokesperson, SP Patrick Onyango said

“The CCTV footage will be availed to you any time here. It takes a few processes retrieving it.”

While the Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said that construction activities taking place around the city greatly disorganizes the CCTV cables in place.

“Security companies like UMEME, National Water, KCCA also carries out a lot of construction works which disrupts the underground cables which we laid,” Enanga said.

However, to Kalule the Police are trying to cover up their mistakes because the CCTV Cameras are ever on.

“We know that those Cameras are always on 24/7, so they need to give us a better reason than that,” Kalule said.

Now following the matter, the People Power women league has threatened to take any action if the Police fail to address the matter.

“We are going to mobilize ourselves, we are going to do whatever it takes, they will teargas us, they will arrest us but we are going to be on the front line and we are going to encourage every Ugandan out there that your life that will be lost in this struggle will not be lost i

Relatedly, Enanga says the installation of the CCTV Cameras in Kampala City has greatly helped to reduce crime in the Kampala Metropolitan Area.

The 2019 crime report shows that 296 cases were reported and investigations were aided by the footage extracted from both the Police and the private cameras.

Crimes captured on CCTV Cameras include; accidents, theft, aggravated robbery and murder.

“The dominant crimes that used to be there pickpocketing in town, vandalism of motor vehicles and even aggravated robberies have reduced to a very big extent,” Enanga said.

“Because of the impact of CCTV in the City Centre as well as increased visibility and awareness, there’s some element of displacement, to some extent criminals have been displaced from within the City Centre into the City suburbs. But also at the City Suburbs, some measures are i

Enanga says CCTV functionality is at times limited by challenges beyond their means like power outages, system breakdown due to construction works that disrupt fibre optic cables among others.

“The power outages once they occur of course in certain policing divisions, it also grossly impact on our investigations.”

Enanga in his further remarks said that construction works that are going on in some areas fail deployment of CCTV Cameras, and for the meantime, they will be using the other traditional mechanism of patrols, high visibility and so on around those places to leave no gap for criminals.

Such areas include; Clock Tower, Nsambya, Naalya, Kasangati among other areas.
