Uganda Police begin investigations on the shooting of student in the mouth

Uganda Police begin investigations on the shooting of a student who was shot in the mouth following riots from Kampala vendors.

Police have confirmed they have embarked on investigations into the circumstances that saw a total of three people injured including one student who was shot in the mouth following riots from city vendors.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango preparations to kick start proper investigations are already in full gear to get clear facts about everything that transpired that day.

Onyango said that they have already documented the scene, obtained relevant witness statements and other evidence material value.

He further implied that investigations are headed by the KMP Criminal Investigative Department (CID) Commander.

“He has already documented the scene, obtained relevant witness statements and other evidence material value. He has also checked on the victims at the hospital evidence,” Onyango said adding that the incident occurred on March 10, 2020, around 1:00 pm during an enforcement operation by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) supported by police.

Sources stated that the incident came up as a result of the police trying to deal with and chase away vendors who were selling items illegally around the Old Taxi Park.

As a way of trying to deal with the rebellious vendors who were yelling a couple of insults and throwing stones to the police truck, the police was left with no decision but to fire tear gas and rubber bullets to try and disperse the violent crowd that far from accepting to vacate the area.

Onyango explained that in the process, three people were injured including a mother and her daughter identified as Racheal Nankya, a senior six student at Lugazi Mixed SS and another person only identified as Jimmy.

He, however, mentioned that all the three people were rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital to try and save their life and currently it is where they are acquiring medication from.

Onyango added that police is only awaiting scan results and a full medical report to properly determine the nature of injuries and in the process, they will be able to know whether the three people were shot or acquired other injuries away from the shooting.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga and Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago have come out to condemn the shooting of a student and her mother by police during an operation against city vendors.

Ms Kadaga directed the government to consider footing all the medical and upkeep expenses of Lowena Racheal, who, together with her mother, Nakachwa Irene, were hospitalised after sustaining serious injuries in the KCCA/Police operations against the street vendor.

The Kampala Central Member of Parliament, Mohamed Nsereko also called for a full report into the shooting and promised to help
