Taking over from Uhuru Kenyatta after his two terms as president ended, William Samoei Arap Ruto is the fifth President of Kenya.

William Samoei Arap Ruto has been elected the 5th president of Kenya replacing Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta whose two terms in office came to an end.

William Ruto garnered 50.49% of the vote against Odinga’s 48.5% of the vote. The deputy president won in his first run, beating former prime minister Raila Odinga who was running for the 5th time.

Other candidates including David Mwaire conceded defeat, George Wajackoyah said polls were rigged while first runner up Odinga’s chief agent said polls were conducted in an opaque manner.

Speaking shortly after his announcement, Ruto thanked the country’s Electoral Commission and his competitors for standing firm and remaining calm throughout the whole election process.

“It is a wonderful evening, and I want to thank God that we are here to witness this momentous occasion. I want to thank God for getting us to this point. I want to thank God that today, we have concluded this election,” Ruto said.

“We are here because there is a God in Heaven. Without God, we wouldn’t be here. The hero of this election is the IEBC, led by Wafula Chebutaki. The IEBC amazed all of us. I want to thank my worthy competitor Hon. Raila Odinga. We dwelled on issues and tried to sell an agenda to the people of Kenya during the campaign.”

He expressed his gratitude to the people of Kenya especially those who turned up to vote, and the millions who have waited patiently for the day of announcing the results.

Ruto said in this election, that there were no losers. He said Kenya as the entire country was victorious in portraying a good image to countries that were on the watch.

“The people of Kenya have won because we have raised the political bar. The people of Kenya are the biggest winners. We have raised the bar, and I want to thank my countrymen. Gratitude to the millions of Kenyans who refused to be boxed into tribal sentiments,” he said.

“We are very proud of Wafula Chebutaki. He put the results of this election on a public portal for all Kenyans to access. That became the game changer in this election.”

In addition, he promised he would work closely with all the leaders in Kenya in a bid to fashion a country where no specific citizen or individual is left behind.

Ruto also promised the Kenyans that he would run an open, transparent, and democratic leadership ensuring equal rights for all citizens.

“I will work with the opposition to provide oversight to my leadership. I want to promise the people of Kenya that whatever way they voted, this will be their government. Our country is at a point where we need all hands on deck to move it forward. We must work together for a prosperous and functional Kenya,” he added.
