Activities at Yebo Safari Camp

Visiting the Top of the Murchison Falls

Waterfalls to Visit in Uganda
The most visited waterfall in Uganda is Murchison Falls. PHOTO/DESTINATION UGANDA

Visiting the top of the falls is the first thing that most people undertake. As it makes its journey to Egypt, the river Nile squeezes through a small gorge, creating the Murchison Falls

To reach the top of the falls, a guide is not required, although it is important to travel with a team or someone who is familiar with the area. The view of the falls from the top is breath-taking.

The deafening sound of the water as it fights its way through the gorge before plunging 42 metres below is one of the park’s most memorable experiences. The mist created by the force of the water interacts with the sun’s rise to create beautiful rainbows that are breath-taking to observe.

The mist from the waterfall has a soothing and calming effect on hot days or during the dry season, especially after a long day of activities. This location is ideal for photography; thus, you should not visit without a camera.

Boat cruise to the bottom of the falls

This is one of the most popular things to do in the park. The trip takes about three hours. It begins and ends at the base of the falls. The part of the Nile downstream from the falls is teeming with wildlife, including Africa’s largest populations of hippos and crocodiles.

Additionally, visitors can observe buffaloes, elephants, and several species of antelopes drinking along the riverbanks. There are bee-eaters, cormorants, ducks, fish eagles, herons, kingfishers, and shoebills among the water birds.

Boat cruise to the Nile Delta

The Nile Delta is the point where the river Nile meets Lake Albert and is accessible by boat. To reach the Nile Delta by boat, one must travel further upstream than the point where conventional cruise boats make a turn.

This exercise demands a half-day commitment and is essential for birders. Several bird species, notably the endangered shoebill stork, inhabit the regions surrounding the Nile Delta.

Bird-watching

Murchison Falls National Park is one of the top locations in Uganda for birdwatching. You can observe birds during nature walks or in a safari vehicle.

As a huge park, Murchison Falls offers various birdwatching opportunities and locations. It could begin just outside your camping tent and go through the Savannah grasslands, forests, and the Nile River.

Additionally, birdwatching is possible in the Kaniyo Pabidi forest reserve area. Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, African Darter, African Fish Eagle, African Jacana, African Quail-Finch, African Skimmer, and African Jacana are among the bird species found in the park.

Game drive

Game Drives are undoubtedly the most entertaining activity in the park. The presence of a park ranger makes game drives a more educational experience, as they can help identify the species of birds and mammals and direct you to the best locations to observe them.

Expect to see buffaloes, crocodiles, elephants, giraffes, Hippopotamus, Leopards, lions, Monitor lizards, Spotted Hyenas, and warthogs on a 3-hour game drive to Murchison Falls. The park is home to a variety of antelope species.

In addition to the daytime game drives, tourists can also opt for the two-hour night game drive. During the night game drive, the likelihood of spotting predators such as hyenas, lions, serval cats, and leopards increases. The rangers utilise flashlights to ensure that no action is missed.

Rhino tracking

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is situated between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park. In Uganda’s national parks, rhinos are extinct due to rampant poaching.

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was intended to conserve the last rhinos and increase their population through careful breeding before returning them to larger parks when their numbers exceed twenty.

The primary activity here is rhino tracking on foot, normally overseen by sanctuary rangers. Rangers provide information about rhinoceroses, the sanctuary’s history, the breeding programme, and broader conservation initiatives. They then lead guests to observe the huge mammals feeding up close.

Fishing

The region beneath Murchison Falls is one of the best sites in Uganda for fishing. It is still possible to catch Nile Perch measuring over 200 pounds in this section of the Nile. Tigerfish and Tilapia are two additional commonly obtained species.

Visitors can fish on the river Nile from a boat or cast their line from the base of the Murchison Falls. Before the Nile Perch can be caught, smaller fish must be captured and used as bait.

Chimpanzee tracking

Budongo Forest contains over 464 plant and mammal species, including around 820 chimpanzees. The tracking of chimpanzees begins at 8 am and ends at 3 pm.

The likelihood of spotting chimpanzees is great but depends on the time of year. The ideal months to observe chimpanzees are May and August.

Hot air balloon safaris

Murchison Falls is the only park in Uganda where one can embark on a hot air balloon safari to view wildlife. This exercise begins early in the morning with the balloon’s collection and inflation.

Before taking off, tourists are briefed on safety concerns. The activity lasts approximately one hour and allows participants to photograph wildlife and forests from above ground. It is awe-inspiring to fly over large herds of giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, and the night’s top predators returning from their hunt.

At the conclusion of the activity, travellers will have seen more animals than on typical game drives. Visitors are entitled to a participation certificate upon completion of the activity.

Community visit

This activity is organised with the Boomu Women’s group for a few hours or an entire day. The organisation provides village visits and an African art shop. The village walks provide an opportunity to meet and interact with village residents.

One can even spend the night and sleep in a traditional African hut with a rural African family. After spending the night with the family, the guest can assist with garden chores or cook with the community’s women.
