Besigye has joined a section of many other Ugandans to mourn the death of Bishop John Baptist.
In a statement via his social media platform, Besigye regarded the fallen Bishop as an all-round strong leader and a true man of God who will be hugely missed by the country at large.
”A great prelate, an all-round strong leader, and, truly, a man of God, Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa returns to the Lord. A great loss for the country,” part of Besigye’s statement read before sending out his condolences to his family and the entire Church fraternity.
”My heartfelt sympathy and prayers go to the family, the Archibishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga and the entire Catholic Church.”
Rt. Rev John Baptist Kaggwa who formerly served as the Masaka Catholic Diocese Bishop succumbed to the COVID-19 according to a confirmation released on Wednesday evening.
Rev Fr Ronald Mayanja, the diocesan communications director said that the deceased has been battling with the deadly virus which he contracted two months back.
“It’s true the Bishop has gone to be with the Lord; he succumbed to Covid-19, which he has been battling for two months,” Fr Mayanja disclosed.
His death comes at a time when hospitals countrywide are already overwhelmed by the increasing coronavirus cases. The health ministry Wednesday announced 94 new cases from COVID-19 tests done on 19 January 2021.
This pushes the cumulative confirmed cases to 38,628. Of these, 305 have succumbed to the virus while 13,413 have since recovered from it after the Ministry also recorded eight new recoveries.
Who was Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa?
Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa, 78, was born on 23 March 1943 at Bulenga, Busiro County, Wakiso District, in the Buganda region of Uganda.
He attended Lubaga Boys Primary School from 1952 until he completed Primary 6 in 1957. He then joined Kisubi Minor Seminary in 1958. While at Kisubi, he studied Latin. Later he studied at Katigondo Major Seminary where he studied Philosophy.
In 1965, he was sent to study at Pontifical Urban University, in Rome, on scholarship. The late Bishop Kaggwa was ordained deacon in May 1970 in Rome.
On 12 December 1971, he has ordained a priest, also in Rome, at the age of 28 years. At the time of his death, John Baptist Kaggwa was holding a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Canon Law and Secular Law, awarded by Pontifical Urban University.
Other achievements, For more than two years, from 19 December 1994 until 10 January 1998, Bishop Kaggwa served as Coadjutor Bishop of Masaka, Uganda. He later served as Bishop Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Masaka.
He retired on 16 April 2018 at the age of 75 and was succeeded by Bishop Severus Jjumba on July 6, 2019.
