The National Unity Platform (NUP) party President, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine has commended Col. Kizza Besigye’s decision to pull out of the race for Presidency in the coming 2021 general elections.

Earlier this week, Besigye now a party member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party confirmed that he will be a spectator like many Ugandans in the 2021 presidential elections.

His decision came after losing out to Mr Museveni for the country’s presidency in the last four elections.

Before the uprising of Bobi Wine and his people power initiative, Besigye together with his FDC party has been Museveni’s tight competitor in all Uganda’s recent presidential elections.

Besigye who has challenged President Museveni for the position since 2001, has on each occasion accused the President of rigging the elections.

Notably, in 2001 and 2006, where he raised complaints to the Supreme Court two and on both occasions the judges unanimously confirmed there was widespread rigging but on a split decision of 5:2 and 4:3 respectively, the majority judges ruled that the vote-stealing was not substantial as to reverse the final result.

Besigye’s decision to quit the race, however, has been well received by a section of opposition members, in particular, Bobi Wine who applauded him for being such an exemplary leader.

Bobi Wine said that power even for those on the opposite side can be very corrupting but Besigye’s decision has shown everyone that it is the only way to go if we are to seek the change we are fighting for.

“First of all I want to applaud Dr Kizza Besigye for not just saying it but living it. We know that power, whether in Opposition or in office, can be very corrupting. So to see that he has risen above the corruption of power and ceded it, is nothing to take for granted,” Bobi Wine said.

Bobi Wine also, said that he has spent over two years trying to engage Dr Kizza Besigye that the opposition needs to unite as one to accomplish the goal of bringing about a regime change.

“It has been more than two years trying to engage Dr Besigye to see that not only he doesn’t run but we stand together to bring one candidate. I went ahead to present myself,’’ Kyagulanyi added regarding Besigye as someone who has not only inspired him but also mentored him in many ways.

Bobi Wine further advised Besigye to remain in the struggle even when he is not standing for any position. He said he should remain a big political figure leading from the sides.

“It is my hope and prayer that he does not just step aside but leads from the sides. He is a huge resource, we have been in conversation and we continue to be in the conversation.

As we take on Museveni, we need Dr Besigye. Not only him but all eminent leaders that have been taking on the dictatorship over time. We hope that we can stand together and summon all their energies together and fight the dictator,” he added.
