Kadaga summons Prime Minister to address the country on the survival of Ugandan students stuck in Coronavirus Wuhan city of China
Ever since coronavirus emerged in China, Wuhan Province many countries have done everything possible to evacuate their citizens from China. But Uganda chooses to quarantine and care for its citizens while in China, which promoted Speaker Kadaga to summon Prime Minister.
But this has not gone well with Ugandan students studying in China which forced them to petition the Speaker of Parliament for government’s intervention through the Kawempe North legislator, Latif Ssebgala who presented the petition on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday 11, February 2020.
“Our utmost plea is that the government of Uganda use its diplomatic engagement with the Chinese government to allow for a timely evacuation exercise,” the petition reads.Tweet
This prompted the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga to summon the leader of government business in Parliament, Dr Ruhakana Ruggunda to brief legislators on the fate of Ugandans students stranded in China after the outbreak of coronavirus which has reportedly claimed 1,000 lives.
“Demanding that the Prime Minister comes here to address this country on this issue tomorrow (Wednesday). About the interim measures for their survival there and your accurate measures for either repatriating them or treating them from there,” Kadaga said.Tweet
This followed the Government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa submission saying government sends logistics to Ugandans quarantined in China which was not satisfactory to legislators.
“Evacuating them and maintaining them in Uganda when they are there quarantined, or sending logistics to help them where they are quarantined,” Nankabirwa said.Tweet
Legislators asked the government to do everything possible to evacuate students studying in Wuhan China. In their argument, the students are stack in China with no food, water which in the end can bring death following starvation.
Recent reports from China Health officials shows that the death toll of coronavirus has reached over 1,000 with over 42 confirmed cases.
