Based in Gulu, this outdoor leisure centre boasts a 5-acre forest and a variety of activities, making it one to look out for on your next trip to Northern Uganda. The park serves as both a recreational and educational hub. 

Some of the most sought-after games and activities at the park include Low ropes exercises, a 300-foot zipline, and a 30-foot-tall climbing wall.

The Recreation Project is a social enterprise that sells transformative outdoor adventure experiences to paying customers to subsidise free outdoor adventure experiences for children and youth in Northern Uganda. 

The Recreation Project provides a game-based learning experience, offering educational and therapeutic services to children and their families. 

The game-based learning aims at fostering greater emotional and behavioural development and the kinds of relationships that help young people deal with hardship.

How to get to the Recreation Project

Team building and retreats: The Recreation Project provides custom-designed team building activities, and staff retreats in a forest setting or at a venue of your choice. 

The staff collaborate with the client to determine the team’s goals. The goals may include problem-solving, planning, collaboration etc. 

After understanding the team’s client’s goals, the team at The Recreation Project constructs a programme based on hundreds of activities to facilitate the client at hand. 

On-site activities may include a 30-meter climbing wall, zipline and high ropes course.

Climbing club: It is a 15-week programme for 16-24-year-olds out of school, many of whom were forced to drop out of school early owing to financial restraints at home. 

Over three months, The Recreation Project’s outdoor adventure centre receives groups of 20 adolescents from target communities once a week. 

As a result, they acquire both technical climbing skills and life-changing lessons. 

The outdoor centre hosts Family Days on which parents and spouses may come out and see what their children have learned, participate in discussions and activities aimed at creating a loving home environment, and even try their hand at high ropes activities. 

The curriculum culminates in a 50-meter cliff-climbing adventure in the outdoors.

Nature walk: The park is in the middle of a manmade forest; therefore, it is cool and convenient for walks.

Zip lining: Ziplining is an adventure activity that involves moving across a steel cable from one point to another using a harness, helmet, and a trolley. 

This game gives a rush of adrenaline and provides a unique view of the environment around you. 

Low ropes course: At any level, low ropes courses can be an excellent learning and developmental tool. 

The low ropes course at the Recreation project includes Balance Beam, Peg Pole Challenge, Wild Woozy, and Postman’s Walk.

High ropes course: On high ropes courses, you move across bridges, platforms, obstacles and even swings in the air. 

People can choose their adventure because there are often different ways to go about it and various levels of challenges.

Climbing wall: There is a 30 feet tall climbing wall set up within the forest. The wall is artificially constructed and has both feet grips to enable participants to scale the wall. 

To climb, you need equipment such as climbing shoes and harnesses which are provided at the park.

Rock climbing: Rock climbing is an outdoor sport that involves ascending rock faces that are difficult to walk up. The sport requires more equipment than that used for climbing an artificial wall.

How to get to the Recreation Project

Take the Kampala-Gulu highway up to Gulu. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto Sira Dongo road. 

At the second roundabout, take the second exit onto Gulu-Arua road/Nimule-Gulu Road and drive for about 2.6 km before turning right. 

Upon turning right, the Recreation Project will be on the left within 2 minutes of Gulu-Arua road.

Meals/Dining

All meals are charged separately, with options ranging from 3,500 to 40,000 Ugandan Shillings per person, based on what you choose to eat.

Accommodation at the park

There are no permanent accommodation facilities.

The best way to spend a night at The Recreation Project is camping. 

At the campsite, you can set up a campfire where you can share stories, play games and enjoy the night views of the area. 

There are a few nearby hotels where you can also stay while visiting The Recreation Project. 

Dich Comfort Hotel

Dich Comfort Hotel is located in Gulu and is a few metres from The Recreation Project. The rooms feature air conditioning, mosquito netting and window screens, DSTV on flat-screen televisions, hot water, and a balcony.
