Makerere acquires only 7000 gowns from China ahead of 70th graduation, less than the total number of graduands

With less than five days to the 70th Graduation, Makerere University has managed to secure up to only 7,000 gowns, more than a half less than the total number of graduands this year.

For this year’s upcoming graduation ceremony alone, the University confirmed a total of up to 13,000 graduands who are expected to graduate in the 70th graduation.

However, a statement from the office of the University’s Academic Registrar Alfred Masikye Namoah corroborated by Dr Muhammad Kiggundu Musoke, the acting Makerere University Communications and International Relations Manager to the Ceremonies committee on Wednesday morning indicated that only 7000 gowns have been acquired from China.

The institution in 2018 adopted a mandatory fee of Shs98,000 paid by all students for a patented University Gown.

Each year, the University spends approximately Shillings 770 million as graduation costs but at the same time delays in procurement, payment and issuing out of these gowns has become a big challenge every graduation.

During the 69th graduation ceremony last year, the same challenges including issuing gowns and cards to graduands rose in Makerere University.

However, the University Academic Registrar has implied that all graduands will pick their gowns from their respective colleges to minimise congestion.

With the first batch of issuing out these gowns set to start effectively today on Thursday, January 9 graduands are advised to report to the institution and receive all the necessary documents including invitation cards and car stickers.
