Graduands should be patient they will get their gowns in time for graduation – says Makerere Management
Makerere University management has called on all Graduands who are yet to receive their gowns to remain patience that each particular student will be able to get his or her gown before the specific graduation dates.
Following last week’s report from the institution, the University had received only 6383 gowns, 900 caps and 6792 hoods in different instalments by Team Uniform Limited, the official supplier of gowns for the 70th convocation (January 14-17, 2020) which was not enough to cover the total number of expected Graduands of up to 13,509 students.
Since then tension has arisen among the students who are worried about graduating in casual. Besides, a small section of the students was captured on Monday 13th striking, airing out their disappointment towards the management.
However, in a statement from the University Administration, every student will be in a position to get their gowns day or two before the actual graduation day.

The statement also added that particulars whose graduation is slated for Friday 17th January will collect their gowns from their respective colleges beginning 2:00 on Wednesday 15th January.
“I want to assure students, parents and everyone that each graduating student will be able to have a gown. We have gotten emergency measures to get the gown. It is our responsibility to deliver the gowns which we are going to do,’’ the University statement read.

Makerere University will hold its 70th Graduation starting tomorrow on Tuesday 14th January with a total of up to 13,509 students expected to graduate. The four-day ceremony will run from 14th to 17th January 2020 at the Freedom Square.
Meanwhile, the University gave the reason for the delayed issuing of these gowns blaming the contractor for breaching an agreement they had signed to have gowns supplied to University upon every graduation.
On February 20, 2017, Makerere executed a contract with Team Uniform Limited to supply and sale graduation gowns to Makerere University Graduands over an agreed period but this was not accomplished this time around as only close to half the number was supplied.
In response, the University notified the Team Uniform Limited, the company contracted to make and supply these gowns about a breach of contract and any further delay would see the university seeking judicial remedies including suing them for illegal termination of the contract.
