MPs spend a night at Uganda Parliament protesting assassination attempts

A group of MPs yesterday on Tuesday the 21st of January decided to spend the night at Parliament without going home protesting assassination attempts and government reluctance to act against the criminals who are after their lives.

MPs say their lives are insecure at home and have decided to spend the night at parliament over assailants that keep threatening them to send a message to the government to act against the assassinators.

The leader of the opposition, Betty Aol Ochan who lead the protest said that on the 13th, January 2020 there was an assassination attempt on Hon Atkins Katushabe and government has done nothing, which is affecting all of them.

“That attempt of putting guns on him was not called for when he had gone for a funeral, and secondly then he was robbed. So, it was an aggravated robbery,” Ochan said. “You can imagine 13th and today is 21st nothing has yet been on the criminals.”

“Instead Hon Katushabe had to go to the criminals to report this case to the criminals, we said no! so he reported it to CID headquarters, we want to just give Speaker that benefit of doubt up to Thursday, because otherwise today instead of looking for the criminals, the Minister

Ochan says their action is not about fear but it’s about the protest, because they are not pleased with what is going on in the country.

“If you go to the road, they will teargas us. So, we said the best thing to do is to remain at Parliament and to let government act because the government seems to be very insensitive about the plight of people of Uganda not only members of Parliament. Members of Parliament yes!

Ochan pointed assassinations that have happened in the country and went unaddressed and now more death threats are continuing which must be stopped.

“The assassination of the former Deputy IGP, it went just like that and many other people I cannot name them all, then also of Hon Abiriga also it went just like that. We could now be talking of the late Hon Katushabe, if not by God’s grace, we now know that he survived that atte

Ochan however, asked the government to clean up the security agencies if truly there are mafias among them and make them answerable to all crimes committed against Ugandan

“If there are mafias in the Police or the UPDF, the government must clean it and more especially, in this case, the criminals, why can’t government act, arrest them and bring them to book.”

Speaking, Hon Katushabe said what’s important now is to acquire everything within their means to save the nation.

He adds that the criminals who want to kill him are known to the government.

“If they want to come and attack us, get or pull us out of the chambers that’s up to them. I think what’s important is to acquire everything within our means to save the nation. We cannot allow criminality to define and become a description of who we are as a country, the crimina
