Over 5,000 Police recruits at Kabalye police training school receive military training from UPDF

Police recruits exceeding 5,000 are receiving skills on how to deal with paramilitary situations from military officials, for a period of three months, at Kabalye Police Training School in Masindi District.

Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said that the purpose of this training is to ensure that hard to reach areas like swampy, mountainous and Karamoja areas are covered up, and also to prepare Police for sudden incidents.

Enanga says over 800 trainers are lined up to equip the new police recruits with the necessary military skills in their one training period.

Enanga made the remarks to clarify on the reports that military officers’ have been deployed at Police training school and taken up the school.

Defending the statement, Enanga said that the army has not taken up the school, but police invited them to help train their 4500 new Probation Police Constables (PPCs) recruits and 500 Learners Assistant Inspector of Police (LAIPs) with military skills that will help curb crimes easily and effectively.

Recruits take up 12 months training, which they began on September 14th, 2019. And in each step they arrive to, scrutiny exercise is conducted to prove their physical and mental alertness.

Enanga adds that the training helps them to improve their skills particularly in handling paramilitary situations because Uganda’s population has increased and violence is on a rise today.

And according to him, security has to be improved such that the crime rate in the country is curbed.

“Why we take our officers through the military approach is that the training helps improve their skills especially when handling paramilitary situations. These days you have seen that there is much violence in the community and there is an increase in population which requires our officers to have these skills to counter any situation,” Enanga said.

Now after this military training, the recruits will again start police training, equipping them with police technics in handling and responding to crimes.

This includes; crime scene management, responses to security alerts, investigation, crowd control and the law.
