Sylvia Owori is a fashion designer, businesswoman, political lobbyist and entrepreneur. She is also the chairperson and Chief Executive officer of Zipa modelling Agency, a company that she founded and owns.
Sylvia Owori is reported to be one of the wealthiest women in Uganda because of her various ventures, though her net worth is not reported in the media.
Sylvia is also remembered for organizing the Miss Uganda contest and various fashion design shows that used to happen at club silk before it was defunct.
Early life and education
Sylvia Owori was born in Uganda in 1976 and she is one of the seven siblings. She attended Nsambya senior secondary school, in Kampala the capital city of Uganda and this is the largest city in the country.
Owori attended New Ham College in London, beginning at the age of 19 graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in fashion design.
After her studies in the United Kingdom, Owori returned to Uganda and opened up a boutique that initially sold only imported clothes.
This enterprise, Sylvie’s Boutique, maintains its headquarters at Garden city mall in Kampala central business district with another branch at Mabirizi complex, also in Kampala and a third store in Kilimani a section of Nairobi, the Kenyan capital.
This business employed over 80 people in both countries as of December 2009. Owori also began designing and manufacturing clothes for herself and her friends.
In 2000 she was selected to design the clothes worn by the contestants at MNet face of Africa, in Dar es Salaam and Cape Town.
In 2001 she was selected to design the clothes worn by the Ugandan finalist at the Nokia Face of Africa competition.
From 2001 until 2004, Sylvia took over the task of organizing the Miss Uganda beauty pageant and this helped her in expanding her visibility and no wonder in 2004 she launched her clothing line, under the Sylvia Owori label.
In 2005, she launched Africa woman magazine, a glossy monthly publication with circulation in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, South Sudan and Tanzania.
Owori designed and manufactured the costumes for the lead actors, actresses and part of the cast of the film THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, which was released in 2006.
She is also the founder and owner of Zipa modelling Agency, a leading fashion talent house in the African great lakes area.
Currently, Owori is the Executive Assistant to the chief coordinator of operation wealth creation on public-private community partnerships.
Sylvia Owori is a mother of two sons, one of the children born in 2008, was fathered by Al Hajji Nasser Ssebagala, the late and the former mayor of Kampala from 2006 to 2011.
But it was rumoured that she was in a relationship with a kickboxer called Malik in 2011 who doubled as the manager.
Owori was once involved in a verbal exchange with the Late Nasser Ssebagala the former mayor of Kampala over the issue of child custody. Nasser wanted full rights of his child but Owori didn’t want to take that lane and they ended up in court.
Recently Owori was attacked by musicians who were flogged in Gulu when they had gone to meet Gen Salim Saleh. The musicians said that on the command of Owori he directed soldiers to beat up musicians which she denies.
