Uganda’s Bobi Wine named on the 2019 TIME 100 NEXT List of the most influential personalities in the world

Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, the Kyadondo East legislator and the People Power leader has been named on 2019, Time’s 100 Next List of the most influential personalities in the world.

Bobi Wine was put under the category ‘Phenoms’ together with 16 other personalities. This category recognises personalities who have achieved a lot in the shortest time. 

The reason why he was listed, the website stated that;

“Bobi Wine spent his career singing about social injustices. In 2017, he decided to take things a step further by running for and winning, a seat in parliament. Now the 37-year-old singer, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has set his sight higher, announcing in July that he will take on president Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled for the past 33 years through a combination of deft politics questionable election practices and Constitutional malpractices.”

In their further explanation, they said in the shortest time, Bobi Wine managed to awaken hope among Uganda’s young generation that has for long yearned for change.

‘TIME 100 NEXT’s’ is a new list, part of an ongoing expansion of the Flagship TIME 100 franchise that identifies 100 rising stars who are nurturing the future of health, sports, science, politics, entertainment and business.

Also, TIME 100 NEXT List features influential people who rose to fame via traditional power structures. And Bobi Wine is the first Ugandan to appear in the TIME’s NEXT List, since inception.

For the time he has spent in politics, Bobi Wine has drawn a numbery of accusations against President Museveni ranging from election malpractices and constitutional manipulation, who according to him does not deserve to continue serving the nation.

“Eight per cent of our population is under the age of 35. They deserve a leader who works for the future of Uganda, not himself,” Bobi Wine said earlier.

Bobi Wine’s popularity is rising tremendously and according to him, president Museveni is already scared of him ahead of 2021, general elections.

Despite being jailed, beaten and the treason charges imposed against him, Bobi Wine says the struggle has to continue and insists that change has to come to the country.

Reacting to his international recognition via his social media account, Bobi Wine who’s is currently in the US said he’s very much delighted and humbled to be among the 100 influential personalities in the world.

After, Bobi Wine dedicated his achievement to the Ugandan youths particularly the ghetto youths in Uganda, to serve as a motivational tool in all their endeavours’.

“This is exceedingly humbling. Dedicating this recognition to the young people of Uganda, especially the ghetto youth. May this be a reminder and encouragement that you are not what your detractors say you are. You are what you choose to be.”

Democratic Party president, Norbert Mao also in a tweet joined Bobi Wine in celebrating his victory.

“Our very own, Bobi Wine has made it to the list of ‘TIME 100’. He’s in the category of ‘Phenom’s’ i.e. people who achieve a lot very quickly. Congratulations,” Mao tweeted.

Also in the list included other East African stars namely Wanuri Kahiu, a Kenyan Film Maker in the category of ‘artists’ and Adut Akech a south Sudanese model in the category of advocates.

‘TIME 100’ website said that the list released this year particularly focussed on the young generation regardless of the age group.

Alysa Liu, a skating Phenom was the youngest on the list aged 14 years old. She was the first US woman to land a quadruple Lutz in competition.

Ayman Odeh, aged 44 a politician was the oldest personality on the list, he emerged a potential kingmaker in Israel, in Israel’s Political arena.
