National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Thembo Gideon Mujungu has been elected as a member of Parliament for Busongora South Constituency.
Thembo Gideon Mujungu, a candidate from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, has been elected as the Member of Parliament for the Busongora South Constituency.
Gideon Mujungu garnered 12,088 votes against his closet competitor Jackson Mbaju of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party who managed only 6,866 votes.
Others including the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC candidate Aloysius Kighema Baguma who came third polled 5,564 votes, while independent candidate David Mulindwa Isimwa got 2,093 votes.
The last two candidates including Benadet Businge of the Democratic Party-DP managed only 84 votes while another candidate identified as Doreen Izaagire got only 32 votes.
Thembo Gideon Mujungu was declared the winner by the Kasese District Returning Officer, Takih Ismail Takih Atwijukire last night.
Speaking about the victory, the NRM Secretariat through their Director of Information, Emmanuel Dombo said the party has in recent weeks participated in a number of by-elections but the particular one in Busongora has posed many challenges.
He, however, commended the love and zeal that was extended to the NRM candidate, the NRM legislators, and other senior leaders from the Kasese district.
He said from the time their colleague’s election was annulled by the Court of Appeal, they all resolved that an “attack” on any of them was an attack on the entire NRM family, and therefore decided to make a collective defence of Hon. Mujungu’s seat.
“The MPs decided to take leave from their Parliamentary and government work until their colleague’s seat was recaptured so that they could resume Parliament together! This demonstrable act of kindness and empathy is very rear and must be applauded,” Dombo said.
“The MPs together with the Kasese NRM DEC Chairman and CEC member, Hon Kiyonga sought out the NRM Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong and assured him that they wouldn’t rest until they have reclaimed the NRM seat.”

In addition, he said the leaders did not only promise but they also returned to Kasese and their single most important activity every day has been the Busongora South by-election.
He said many of them had a clearly defined task and continued to seek the necessary manpower and equipment to ensure that victory was brought back to them.
“Their modus operandi, almost unprecedented, was something that should be encouraged, documented and emulated. They mobilised various resources, including their personal resources for a cause others would have easily felt it isn’t any of their business.
“I got surprised when an MP from another constituency was selected to head the campaign taskforce for another constituency and he accepted! Hon Kambale Ferigo has been the head of the taskforce assisted by Hon Sowedi, with Hon. Kabyanga as head of special operations! All this was centrally coordinated by the workaholic technocratic CEC member Dr. Crispus Kiyonga,” Dombo added.
