Anita Annet Among is a Ugandan politician, accountant and lawyer. She’s the former Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda (2021-2026).
However, in the same period time, she got elected as the Speaker of Parliament on March 25 2022, following the death of the Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Lokori Oulanyah in the same month.
Among will serve as the Speaker of Parliament till 2026. Concurrently, Among serves as the Woman Member of Parliament for the Bukedea District, Teso Sub-Region.
She held the same position in the 10th parliament (2016-2021) before joining the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party where she got elected as the Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament.
She’s one of the few MPs who were voted to parliament in 2021 unopposed.
Early Life and Education
Anita Among was born on 23 November 1973 in Bukedea District. She attended local schools for her elementary and secondary education.
Then later, Among joined Makerere University where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, in 2005.
In 2008, Among attained a Master of Business Administration from Makerere University. While in 2018, she was awarded a Bachelor of Laws Degree by Kampala International University (KIU).
Work and Experience
Anita Among before politics, at Centenary Bank Uganda, one of the largest commercial banks in the country from 1998 till 2006, where she rose to the position of branch manager.
She also served as a lecturer in accounting at Kampala International University.
In 2007, Among ran for the Bukedea District Woman legislator on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket.
This is the time Bukedea District was created. Unfortunately, Among lost the seat and again contested for the Woman MP seat in the 2011 general election and lost the seat to Rose Akol of NRM.
In 2016, Among contested once again this time as an Independent and won the Bukedea District Woman legislator seat in the 10th Parliament.
She got re-elected in 2021 to serve as Bukedea District Woman MP in the 11th Parliament unopposed. This was after joining the NRM party in 2020 after denouncing the FDC party.
After winning the parliamentary vote in 2021, she got nominated by the NRM party for the position of Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament and won the race.
She’s now the reigning Speaker of Parliament of Uganda till 2026.
In the other set of responsibilities at Parliament, Among served as the Vice-Chairperson of the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) in the the10th Parliament.
Anita Among has a son fathered by Patrick Baguma Atenyi, an FDC official and currently co-habiting with Moses Magogo, former president of the Uganda Football Association (FUFA) and the MP representing Budiope East in Buyende District on the NRM ticket.
