The National Resistance Movement Central Executive Committee (CEC) has endorsed Bukedea Woman MP Anita Among as the party flag bearer in the forthcoming speakership race.
The Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the National Resistance Movement has endorsed Bukedea Woman MP Anita Among as its candidate for the forthcoming speakership election.
This has been cited on a document making rounds on different social media platforms quoting a series of statements from the CEC meeting with one reading that;
“Having considered the 12 names of members who had expressed interest in the position of Speaker of the 11th Parliament and having considered the withdrawal of candidature of Hon. Jane Ruth Aceng and that having interacted with all candidates except Hon. Sarah Opendi who did not attend the interaction”
CEC has noted that the NRM party has established a practice and culture of elevating the Deputy Speaker to the position of Speaker even when there has not been any disruption and now, even more, when there is an emergency.
Hereby, recommends to the NRM Parliamentary Caucus the Rt. HON Anita Among Annet for endorsement as the NRM candidate for the position of Speaker of Parliament of Uganda,” the statement reads.
Meanwhile, many other close party associates including NRM’s Secretary-General, Richard Todwong have also since confirmed.
Other close sources including David Kabanda the Kasambya County MP have also tweeted the same. “ANITA AMONG Endorsed by CEC,” he tweeted adding an image of a document with a statement reading the same.
The confirmation now means Among being the NRM flag bearer will finally be endorsed by NRM parliamentary caucus on Thursday in a bid to face off with any other candidates for the seat of the speaker on Friday, in a session chaired by Chief Justice.
Among has hit off competition from 12 other NRM candidates including the Health Minister, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng who earlier pulled out of the race for the position saying that she had not held enough consultations with her associates about the position.
Other NRM candidates who had expressed interest in the position include the State Minister for Defence, Jacob Oboth Oboth who also doubles as the West Budama South MP.
Hon. Jackson Kafuuzi the Kyaka South County Constituency in Kyegegwa District is another.
He is also the curent deputy Attorney General. Felix Okot Ogong the Dokolo South County legislator is the other.
Others include; Hon Pius Wakabi, Okot John Amos, Theodore Ssekikubo, Jackson Atima Lee the Arua Central Division MP, Sarah Opendi the Tororo Woman MP, Hamson Obua the Sports Minister, Alex Kintu Brandon the Kagoma North legislator, and Florence Asiimwe Akiiki the Masindi district Woman MP.
For the opposition end, three members have so far shown interest including Hon Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, Asuman Basaalirwa and Shamim Malende, the Kampala Woman MP ahead of the elections on Friday.
