DJ Bush Baby is a media personality who is among the most famous media personalities in East Africa and he is still remembered for changing the media industry in Tanzania and East Africa at large.
Bush Baby was the brain behind the defunct East African television that was known for promoting east African music.
Bush was also once a manager of East African radio a platform he used in promoting Ugandan music but before joining East African radio he was the brains behind the establishment of Tanzania’s Kiss FM which still stands out as one of East Africa’s biggest radio’s stations.
DJ Bush Baby has worked for several radio stations including Magic FM, Sanyu FM, East African radio, and Urban FM and Nxt radio.
Early life and education
DJ Bush Baby birth name Michael Benjamin Owor was born in 1975 in Entebbe grade-A hospital. In a nutshell, he was born and raised in Entebbe and he grew up in about 15 homes and this came after his mother had passed on.
His father worked at the government printing press before the political turmoil that affected the country.
In his secondary education, he joined Manjari secondary school where he was for one term and after his advanced education, he studied journalism in one of the local media institutions.
Media career
DJ Bush Baby started his media career in his A level at radio Uganda’s green channel currently called Magic FM where he worked from 1998 to 1999.
One day his friend his Tanzania tipped him and he sent a demo to a certain radio station in Tanzania that loved his station and they invited him to go to Tanzania.
Upon this arrival Baby thought was hired to present the morning show but his boss, however, asked him to do programming for the entire station and at this time the station lacked English speaking presenters.
He called 18 friends from Uganda and they created the first broadcasting English radio station in Tanzania which Kiss FM and it still exists. One evening he got a call from the owner of IPA media which is one of the biggest media houses in East Africa.
He wanted to hire him as a presenter to work in one of the radio stations. He drafted the contract and asked him to mention the amount of money he wanted subsequently he resigned and his boss wasn’t happy with the step.
He was later burgled up and deported back to Uganda but fortunately, a week later he went back on the air.
In 2000 DJ Bush Baby joined Sanyu FM where he worked for a couple of years and later returned to the station in 2009 but his brake through came in 2002 when he joined East African radio where he became the station manager.
This media house turned out to be the regional broadcasting powerhouse and it later opened up a TV station known as East African television and still Bush Baby was one of the brains behind the television.
He became too famous to an extent in the region and it was very hard for one to believe that he came from Uganda. While at East African radio he was hosting East Africa’s top 20 songs every week plus other shows.
He used this platform to promote several Ugandan musicians such as Peter Miles, Ziggy Dee, Bebe Cool and others. Bush says east African radio and television were formed to promote the music of East African artists.
At that time, the media in Uganda were not comfortable with playing certain styles of music but when songs were being played by east African television and radio all Ugandan Medias could pick up the song and that’s how peter miles managed to break through the Ugandan market.
During his stay at east African radio, he could come to Uganda every last week in the month at club steak out where he had a night and her could deejay.
After quitting East African radio he returned to Uganda and joined Sanyu FM but he later joined X FM in 2011 as the manager up to 2018.
In 2018 he joined NXT media as the head of the creative department and he was also hosting a countdown show every Saturday on NXT radio.
In 2020 he rejoined X FM but rumour had it that he was going to join STV but he didn’t because they failed to agree on several issues.
When asked if he regrets anything, Bush believes he made a lot of mistakes while still at East African radio which includes wasting a lot of money and he attributes this to the fact that they never had anybody who guides them as a generation which is not the case with the current media personalities.
Relationship
DJ Bush Baby is a married man with children and he says he meant his wife on one of the last flights to Entebbe airport.
