EC clears Bobi Wine and 20 other presidential aspirants to start consultations
Electoral Commission (EC) has revealed that over 20 presidential aspirants have been cleared to start consultations following their presidential bid, before the nomination time.
Justice Simon Byabakama the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission made the revelation while declaring dates on which voter registers will be displayed ahead of the 2021 general elections.
“They are so many! They are over 20 (presidential aspirants) so many that right now there are some on my desk,” Justice Byabakama said.Tweet
“You know the moment we held a meeting with police and 4 aspirants including Hon Kyagulanyi to clear the air, so many (aspirants) came in. so we are going to have I think a record number of presidential candidates because so far we are counting over 20 if all of them come up forTweet
The voter register display process is going to cost Electoral Commission 24.5bn shillings. However, out of the estimated 24 million people in Uganda, only 17 million people are registered as qualified voters.
Justice Byabakama, however, noted all presidential aspirants who have Uganda’s A-Level equivalent to consulting with the National Council for Higher Education before the nomination and those with Uganda’s A-Level certificate should submit their certified copies directly.
“If you know you have a direct A-Level, you submit certified copies to the Electoral Commission, two months before. If you know that you have the equivalent, if you know you are seeking to have the equivalent, you go to National Council for Higher Education,” Justice Byabakama noTweet
The Electoral Commission says the voter registers will be displayed at parish and village levels all over the country to enable all voters to correct their particulars ahead of the polls.
“You go and find out was my application processed, was it processed appropriately, have I been placed at the right polling station, is my name spelt correctly, is my name matched with my correct photograph?” Justice Byabakama said.Tweet
20 presidential aspirants have so far been cleared to start consultations and among them include; Kyadondo East legislator, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, 2016 presidential candidate Elton Joseph Mabirizi, Timothy Mugerwa among others.
Electoral Commission says all aspiring presidents seeking clearance, requires an A-Level certificate or its equivalent and a National Identity Card.
