Dr Kizza Besigye confirms he will not stand in the 2021 Presidential elections.

The former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president, Dr Kizza Besigye has officially made it clear that he will not be standing for Presidency in the 2021 elections.

Besigye made the remarks while speaking at the FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi. He said he felt it necessary to allow other potential candidates a chance to embark on the struggle against the ruling party NRM.

Besigye has participated in four presidential elections since 2001 losing to President Museveni and his National Resistance Movement (NRM) party on all occasions. NRM has ruled Uganda for over 30 years now with President Museveni holding the party’s flag since.

With the FDC still in search for a presidential flag bearer in 2021, the former FDC party president has ended speculation linking him to the responsibility allowing other opposition party presidential hopefuls a chance to try their luck.

Upon arrival at the FDC party offices on the morning of Wednesday, Besigye was welcomed with screams from party supporters who had earlier nominated him to once again be the party’s flag bearer.

Their hopes were, however, shuttered minutes later when he replied to them that this time round he will only rally behind another candidate and not contest.

“Today I came to be part of you as we flag off the process of ‘Channel A’ to continue. I can tell you that I have every confidence in our leaders. Some will be operating in Channel A, and other in Channel B but Channel B will support Channel A,” Besigye said before reiterating that he won the 2016 elections.

He explained that President Museveni used force and manipulated the 2016 elections audit team after realizing he had recorded fewer votes than him.

‘’My 2016 victory was stolen. We wanted an audit of the elections, our friends the swedes offered help. We even signed an MoU to audit. Museveni chickened out of the audit after realizing he did not win. The regime took over our machines here and for three weeks they occupied our offices to capture the evidence we had that we had won the elections, but they did not succeed,” Besigye claimed.

“I can assure you that the greatest number of forms are in our possessions, we can use them to demonstrate to anybody that we won the elections.’’

He, however, reminded that even though he is not standing for Presidency this time around, his mind is still focused on seeing a leadership change. He said he will rally behind other Presidential hopefuls to ensure it is possible.

“Museveni is illegitimate as a leader of this nations. I was taken to jail for declaring to be a winner, he told the court to charge me. It is now five years and we are going into another election, I have never been tried. I am still a prisoner of treason. They don’t want the truth to come out,” Besigye said.
