Makerere University suspends 9 students, 26 others given warning letters for leading strikes

Following a fortnight of strikes by students against the 15% tuition increment policy, Makerere University, the administration has released a full list of students who have been warned and suspended for inciting violence.

The University administration has taken disciplinary action to suspend nine students and many others have been warned for leading to the strike that has now lasted for a second week and there is no hope that it will end any time soon.

Protests by students against the 15 per cent tuition increment policy that they believe was signed without their proper consent started last week and this is the second week.

According to the students, this policy is very unfair not only to those on government but also those on private sponsorship who have to toil hard to get their tuition and they demand that it is revised.

The policy means that after five years, each student will be required to pay 75 per cent more something they claim is very inconsiderate.

As a result, the University met with student leaders on Monday to try and find a solution but it indicated that it was not ready to scrap it.

This, for this whole week, has sparked more protests from students demanding an answer.

However, today the Makerere administration released a list of suspended and warned students requesting them to pick their letters from the Office of the Dean of Students.
