Museveni has pledged a contribution of sh1 billion to Fort Portal Diocese towards renovation of the Virika Cathedral and also to help with the preparations of the Martyrs’ Day celebrations on 3rd June.
President Yoweri Museveni has committed to contribute sh1 billion to Fort Portal Diocese towards the renovation of the Virika Cathedral and also help them in preparations for the Martyr’s Day celebrations slated for 3rd June.
“I am going to give you one billion shillings for the two things, the cathedral roof and Martyrs day preparations,” Museveni pledged on Wednesday while meeting a delegation of eminent members of the Fort Portal Catholic Diocese at his country home in Rwakitura.
“I met a delegation of eminent members of the Fort Portal Catholic Diocese at my country home in Rwakitura. As the animating team of the 3rd June Martyrs’ Day Celebrations, they briefed me on their preparations and we as well discussed developmental and vocational projects,” the president later posted the message on his usual Twitter handle confirming the same.
The meeting was attended by leaders from Kabarole led by Tourism minister, Col. Tom Butime, Agriculture minister, Frank Tumwebaze, and the Bishop of Fort Portal Diocese, Rt Rev Robert Muhiirwa.
Museveni’s pledge, however, comes after the Fort Portal Diocese earlier on launched a fundraising drive to help raise approximately Shs1 bn it said it required to lead this year’s Uganda Martyrs celebrations.
On his side, Bishop Robert Muhiirwa said the Shs1bn will help cater for many activities including liturgy, finance, protocol and security, catering, transport, construction, and decoration.
The Agriculture Minister, Tumwebaze commended the President for sparing time to meet the Church leaders. He also thanked him for rendering them financial support at such a time when Martyr’s Day is first approaching.
“Thank u Excellency for giving us an opportunity to meet and share with u issues of Fortportal diocese and Toro development in general. And thank you again Sir for your support of shs 1b towards Virika Cathedral Renovation and preparations for Celebration of martyr’s day at namugongo,” Tumwebaze tweeted.
Meanwhile, Martyrs’ Day is held every year in Uganda on June 3rd. The day commemorates the 45 martyrs, both Catholic and Anglican, who were killed on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, then King of Buganda between 1885 and 1887.
This year’s celebrations, however, will be the second that Fort Portal Diocese has animated since 1997.
The celebrations shall be guided by the theme, “Baptised and sent to witness Christ with love and hope MT. 28:19, ROM. 8:35.” which is reflected in the way the martyrs died; they were men of faith baptized with water, but some were not yet baptized (baptism of blood).
